<SOLVED> Asus B-350 Plus Prime + Ryzen 7 2700X hiccups

Post by twd78 »

Hello,
I am running Linux Mint 19 with latest updates plus padoka amdgpu PPA betas for my Radeon Rx 580 8GB, the BIOS of the mainboard is the lastest version 4023, the startup problems did not occur for a much older BIOS version.

I have encountered two problems:
First of all, I get a Soft lockup and delay during startup. (see log)

Already tried:
Disabled C6 states using zenstates, disabling/enabling XHCI handoff, Enabling/Disabling Legacy USB, Enabling/Disabling IOMMU, adapted Grub config "idle=nomwait", Power Supply Idle Control set to "Typical Current Idle".
Tested with latest 4.15.x, 4.18.18, 4.19.1., same problem with the different kernels.

Then I get random crashes of applications like Chrome when I set the CPU under heavy load, very stable with normal workload. Some warning messages like these pop up, but I think they do no harm:

Maybe someone has an idea to stop at least the startup delay ?

Thank you in advance

It would be helpful to run the following command from Terminal and post back the results"

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
"Typical Current Idle" setting in BIOS is generally a good solution for the idle freeze problem (see my specs). However, I would like to know the make, model, and wattage of your PSU?

Also, if you boot Mint 19 from Live CD/Flash, are you having any problems?

The PSU ist more than sufficient, its a be quiet! Pure Power 10 600W CM, will test the USB live as soon as I find time.
Had no crashes for now returning back to 4.15.x provided by Mint, but the start delay still remains.

Good PSU. A little surprised you had any of the Freeze problems with that model, unless it wasn't that specific bug.

Beta Padoka is very "Bleeding Edge". Did you try the default and/or Padoka Stable? Not sure it's related, but it's always best to work from "stable" when trying to diagnose problems/bugs.

Do you have IOMMU enabled in BIOS? If not, try enabled (or auto).

I'd also like to see the output from the following command from Terminal.

Code: Select all

lsusb
Linux Mint 19.2 x64 Cinnamon 4.15.0-118-generic
Gigabyte GA-AB350M-D3H (F20) / Ryzen 5 1600 / Micron Ballistix Sport DDR4 2400 2x8GB / Sapphire Radeon HD6450

Regarding IOMMU:
I already tried enabling/disabling and a IOMMU software handling via grub, cannot remember the exact option.

lsusb:

Code: Select all

Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 003 Device 006: ID 04d9:1603 Holtek Semiconductor, Inc. Keyboard
Bus 003 Device 007: ID 0a12:1004 Cambridge Silicon Radio, Ltd
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0003 Linux Foundation 3.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 062a:4102 Creative Labs
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
I start worrying that it is not a software problem, but a bug in the CPU, like outlined by a script on github I found:
https://github.com/suaefar/ryzen-test

My system starts producing errors when using kill-ryzen.sh, and furthermore I had a total freeze compiling a 4.19 kernel when using all threads - again heavy load. With just 3 threads, it compiles without a freeze.
I tend to believe it is a CPU hardware fault - and I also worry that more users are affected than they know.

The early first-generation Ryzen had the "segfault" bug. I'm unaware of any similar problem in 2nd generation. More likely, a defective (yours) processor is possible. Is "CPU 6" the common failure?

The specific IOMMU setting is in BIOS, and I have seen USB problems/failures with it disabled.....although I can't say for certain that problem extends to the B350 chipset.

No, this occured just now under a newly compiled 4.19 kernel (which crashed during compiling on all cores) under minimal load

Since Mint 19 is based on Ubuntu 18.04, have you tried the most recent mainline kernel from Ubuntu?

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/ma ... v4.20-rc4/

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash

if [ $USER != "root" ]; then
echo "Script must be run as root, dying"
  exit 1
fi

WORKDIR=/tmp/Kernel-Update

mkdir -p $WORKDIR
cd $WORKDIR

wget -c http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.20-rc4/linux-headers-4.20.0-042000rc4_4.20.0-042000rc4.201811252331_all.deb

dpkg -i *.deb

cd ~/
rm -r $WORKDIR
Please make sure that you can enter the GRUB menu in order to switch back to old kernel if something bugs out.

Have you run Memtest86 on the memory?

https://www.memtest86.com/

Also:
clock speeds: max: 4091 MHz 1: 3915 MHz 2: 4081 MHz 3: 4066 MHz
4: 4067 MHz 5: 4073 MHz 6: 4067 MHz 7: 4069 MHz 8: 4034 MHz

14: 4063 MHz 15: 4066 MHz 16: 4091 MHz
Are you overclocking?

What I would expect to see is something like this (from another members post for 2700X).
clock speeds: max: 3700 MHz 1: 2189 MHz 2: 2194 MHz 3: 2193 MHz 4: 2154 MHz 5: 2191 MHz 6: 2189 MHz

Yes, I have run memtest86 just recently, was my first suspicion too. I ran it single thread / multithread - both showed no single error.

No I did not overclock intentionally, I just have set the RAM D.O.C.P to 3200, which is the design speed of my RAM and which was quoted as a good idea with the Ryzen 2200G. I used that with my Ryzen 2200G I had first in my machine - which produced no errors. But now I have set the RAM to 2400 and still get errors:

The last resort would be downgrading my bios to the version I had with my Ryzen 2200G, but I am not quite sure if this is a good idea.

Thanks a lot

Definitely looks like 10%+ overclock on processor to me and could certainly explain the processor errors. I would try setting BIOS to "Optimized Defaults", and see if those numbers change to normal max 3.7GHz etc.

FYI.....Kernels 4.14 and newer support Turbo Boost, so you're probably hitting 4.6GHz or more rather than 2700X rated 4.3GHz.

Did that some days before, optimized defaults are already loaded and RAM set to standard 2400.

No, I'm suggesting just loading Optimized Defaults and Save-Exit BIOS without any other change(s) for a test.

Also, when you swapped processors to the 2700X, did you do a manual clear of CMOS from jumper? That is often necessary and standard operating procedure.

Yes I did that, and tweaked afterwards other settings as it did not work out.
But I am just following another hint, nearly frying my CPU now with higher voltage, seems to make a change .... keep you updated after some testing

Edit:
Did not try the manual reset, as I have assumed that this option is deprecated already on those boards

Edit 2:
Adding 0.1 V to the CPU obviously changed something for the good. Though kill-ryzen.sh fails, not one instance of the hardware error appears in dmesg and furthermore, a 16-threads kernel compilation does not lock up nor produce any hardware error in dmesg.
I will try to finetune the voltage (because it is getting pretty hot) and will reset CMOS just to be sure, as I have to do open the case on weekend for another reason.
Thanks for now

I can report the CPU now runs stable, I did a CMOS reset and added an extra +0.05V offset to the CPU.
Before fiddling around too much on the software side, I should have spent more effort to the hardware side. Starting from a CMOS reset when changing the CPU to the voltages.
I also got rid of the start up delay, and in all shame I have to admit, that I totally forgot that I put an USB expansion card into the system
Without this card, all startup issues are gone.

Thank you all for your help
