How can I change the unicode font?

Post by belph » Thu Dec 06, 2018 6:40 am

Aloha mah linuxers,

I am currently trying to beautify my Mint but I struggle to replace the font that is used for unicode emoji.

Here is a picture how a rainbow is displayed in Discord. I'd like it to be coloured and everything just like in it looks on Windows, Android or iOS

EDIT: It's not an Linux Mint problem I think since the proper unicode emoji are used everywhere else expect in Discord, still I think you guys can help. Example: https://i.imgur.com/k6cl58A.png

EDIT EDIT: The problem exist only when using the unicode emoji in names. When I use the normal rainbow emoji in chat it works just fine: https://i.imgur.com/8ugCHMM.png

I hope someone can help :]

Honestly I don't think it's possible to reallly get Linux fonts the same as WIndows etc. How did you install this program?

I used the software manager. I am just confused because the program is using the proper font expect for the names as you can see in the last link.

Run this in a terminal window (copy & paste as a whole):

Code: Select all

tee ~/.config/fontconfig/conf.d/99-noto-color-emoji.conf <<'EOB'
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
<fontconfig>
  <alias>
    <family>serif</family>
    <prefer>
      <family>Noto Color Emoji</family>
    </prefer>
  </alias>
  <alias>
    <family>sans-serif</family>
    <prefer>
      <family>Noto Color Emoji</family>
    </prefer>
  </alias>
  <alias>
    <family>monospace</family>
    <prefer>
      <family>Noto Color Emoji</family>
    </prefer>
  </alias>
</fontconfig>
EOB
Restart the app or your browser afterwards, should be good then (disclaimer: I don't have that app so no guarantees, might be a flatpak issue after all. also this will affect all your system, so you'll start seeing colors appear elsewhere)

I entered everything as you posted it, I even did something like that before, but it sadly didn't work. Just in case I am not able to fix it I contacted the Discord support asking about it.

You're not on LM19+, are you? The fix was for that (if you're not telling that's just what I assume). On older platforms, download and install this package

https://packages.ubuntu.com/disco/all/f ... i/download

If you're on LM19 then see my disclaimer, probably needs to be fixed in the flatpak then (I don't have flatpak installed so I can't check).
