Insanely loud static noise on internal microphone - worked minutes after installation, doesn't anymore?

Post by jackson25 » Sat Dec 08, 2018 3:05 pm

Hei. I had LM Cinnamon 18.3 and I had issues with the internal microphone making an insanely loud hissing sound with my voice barely audible. I switched to LMDE 3 and the thing was fixed - until the first apt upgrade.

I've no idea what's causing it, please help me make Linux my daily driver. This is the last hurdle I need to fix.

I have a Dell Latitude E7270. I'm running LMDE 3 with a full apt update and apt upgrade done 2 minutes ago.

Here's what I'm hearing: https://vocaroo.com/i/s0whcR4SbZhl
This was recorded with via the CLI with arecord - but the same happens no matter where the microphone is used, whether it's Skype or any other application.

This only happens with the internal microphone. Sound works perfectly. Other external microphones - bluetooth and USB ones, work fine.

I've checked pavucontrol and alsamixer and there is no microphone boost activated.

Here's alsamixer: https://mger.co/i/uvyWJ
Here's pavucontrol: https://mger.co/i/uv6je
Here's my sound settings: https://mger.co/i/uvKvk

Please, someone, help. I've spent days trying to fix this - installing all kinds of weird stuff, running all kinds of terminal commands, adding, removing, reinstalling - nothing works. Does anyone know how to fix this? Can anyone run me through getting to the bottom of this?

The strange thing is everything else works in terms of sound - like I said - and external microphones perform well. Except this one.

Needless to say, I did check that the microphone itself isn't broken - so I've booted into Windows and tried it there and it works fine. I'd like to get rid of Windows completely and this is the only thing preventing me from doing so, as I still need to make calls and can't do it with headphones all the time.

Hi jackson25, and welcome to the forum.

Your screenshot of alsamixer doesn't show microphone nor boost. Try hitting the right arrow key a bunch of times (more than 8 at least) to see if they show up then. Also, try the options when you press F4 while that screen is showing.

Good luck.
