Post by bmike1 » Mon Jan 14, 2019 12:59 pm

I think my disk died. How do I test it with the install disk?

So it was working (booting) fine, now it doesn't ?
Get any error messages ?

Yes, to check the health of your HDD from boot disk / usb. do.
Launch the disks tool.
make sure the HDD is selected (it should be anyway).
Click the hamburger menu top right of that screen.
select SMART Data & Self-Tests...
done.

how do I launch the disk tools?
I have a DVD... not USB
the first time I boot this morning it went straight into grub. Subsequent boots post would take a long time then it would hang.

OK, so maybe problem solved..? But for future..
#1 in the menu, search box type disks...that's the program.
#2 does not matter DVD or USB
#3 you did not answer my first questions, did the computer work normally, then suddenly Not, what if any error messages ?

Like I said maybe solved, but still curious, and you might like to know what SMART has to say about that drive ?
