No Wifi Realtek RTL8821CE 19.1

Post by Whoopsie988 »

So it appears no wifi is a common issue from what I've searched up but only a few of the posts and threads I've seen pertain to my wireless card.

I'm running Linux Mint 19.1 on a HP laptop running a R5 2500U with 8GB of RAM. I decided to switch from windows because i was sick of it but I have had no luck in getting the wifi to work. Ethernet works fine but it's incredibly inconvenient and I want to be able to use my laptop as a laptop.

The closest I got to getting the drivers was wget-ing the driver files off github as the driver wasn't in .git format but I had no way (that I knew of) to "make" the driver in the terminal,

I'm as green as they get but I'd really appreciate it if I could get some help, I'm sick of Windows 10 and I really don't wan't to give up and just revert back.

Open Terminal and run these:

Code: Select all

wget -N -t 5 -T 10 https://github.com/UbuntuForums/wireless-info/raw/master/wireless-info && chmod +x wireless-info && ./wireless-info

Code: Select all

cat wireless-info.txt | nc termbin.com 9999
Post URL from Terminal, back here, on your reply.

I seem to have the same or similar problem. I have an HP laptop 15-db0xxx and am not able to dual boot with LinuxMint. The Mint Live session has no internet and the Windows side, when I ran the commands shown here, did not recognize them.

asterisktom, please start a thread of your own. Your problem is totally different than the subject of this thread.

The only reason I brought it up here is because one of you experts (Jeremy B) said that the way to fix the problem was here, linking to this page. He was not writing to me but to someone with the same problem and same type of computer that I have.

Could you generate a similar set of commands for me? I've got the Realtek RTL8105E, but ran the same commands to get a termbin URL: https://termbin.com/8gd8

Pretty new to Linux, so thanks for any help you can offer!

The RTL8105E is an ethernet device. If your wifi is having troubles try

Code: Select all

sudo sed -i 's/wifi.powersave = 3/wifi.powersave = 2/' /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/default-wifi-powersave-on.conf && systemctl restart network-manager.service

JeremyB, thanks for that. Unfortunately my wifi still isn't working even after using that reset and rebooting the machine. The ethernet works fine (I used that to make sure everything was up to date), but the wifi just loads and loads even after connecting. Eventually firefox says "page can't be displayed" due to a timeout, probably. Any other ideas? Thanks for your help!

I tried disabling the firewall as well, and that didn't work. It's not that there is NO wifi, but that it either doesn't work or is incredibly slow (I did manage to load a pixelated version of a webpage, but that didn't have working links, etc.).

You can try setting the connection in Network Manager, IPv6 tab to ignore or disable. If you can change the wifi router settings, see if using just Wireless B/G makes a change

This worked for me on dual boot 19.3 with dual boot Windows 10 new HP Laptop:
  1. As stated above, make sure that secure boot is disabled, ( either through BIOS of your laptop/pc or within windows 10 if dual booting )
  2. In Windows 10 with working WIFI, go to https://github.com/tomaspinho/rtl8821ce in the upper right of the select "clone/download" and save zip file to usb drive and leave in the computer
    (Read through the additional information the developer of the driver has for using his installer)
  3. Restart into your fresh linux install, and go to the usb drive and copy zip file from usb to downloads folder and right click the copied .zip and select "extract here"
  4. Right click the rtl8821ce-master folder and select open in terminal
  5. Type the following commands in the terminal window to make dkms-install.sh and dkms-remove.sh executeable

    Code: Select all

    chmod +x dkms-install.sh

    Code: Select all

    chmod +x dkms-remove.sh
  6. Run the dkms-install.sh script to install the drivers for RTL8821CE

    Code: Select all

    sudo ./dkms-install.sh
  7. Restart and your WiFi should be up and running
I hope these steps help to clarify and remedy any issues you have :D
