[SOLVED] Linux Mint completely freezes when playing videos on chrome.

Post by darkwolf » Wed Apr 17, 2019 9:24 am

Hello everyone. I don't know what happened but it's been a few days that i'm facing a serious problem on my Linux mint 18.3 Cinnamon 64bit installation, whenever i use google chrome to watch some videos for example youtube videos, my pc completely freezes, by completely i mean i can't even use alt+sysrq+r e i s u b, the only thing i can do is pushing the power button, also the sound goes on a continuous loop, same thing happens even if i have chrome opened and use another software at the same time, i'm not sure why but this doesn't seems to happen with firefox, i also have windows 7 installed on dual boot mode, this doesn't happen on windows 7 chrome works pretty well and without any problem there, at first i thought it was a hdd related issue so i got a linux mint 19.1 bootable usb then i checked my ext4 linux partition, i'm not sure but now i think that it is a ram or graphic card related issue because lately i tried a linux distro (Q4OS) which had google chrome preinstalled on live boot and i got the same issue.

Here are some additional info.
I have a nvidia graphic card (nvidia geforce gt 610), 8 gb of ram with no swap area and also tried both 4.4 and 4.15 kernels on lm 18.3 but didn't make any difference.

Any idea what this issue could be and how to fix it????

Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);
- make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- Copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)

Press Enter.

Copy/paste the output in your next message.

Oh i forgot to mention something. I also tried to limit chrome's ram usage by following https://unix.stackexchange.com/question ... zes-system, but it didn't make any big difference.

Disable all visual effects in Cinnamon:
https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... html#ID5.1
(item 5.1)

Written for the Cinnamon in Mint 19.1, but probably usable for your older Cinnamon as well.

Well. Probably it's still too soon be relaxed but it looks like it will not freeze anymore, still man i can't believe that some "visual effects" can cause full system freeze.

They can alright. Those 3D effects are heavy on the system resources, and your rig is rather old and weak in the graphics. :mrgreen:

After a few hours usage i notice that the system still freezes sometimes for a few seconds but at least the freeze isn't permanent, what do you recommend? should i install a lightweight distro like Linux mint xfce or lubuntu? not sure what caused this first but i remember installing some linux-firmware and mesa related updates, but lately i have put a wireless adapter on my pc, i'm also thinking that i accidentally could have physically damaged the graphic card, that's just a hypothesis though.

I think a clean installation of the lightweight Xfce edition of Mint 19.1 is a good idea for you. Note that you'll also need to disable some visual effects in Xfce as well:
