(Solved) Cannot boot into linux mint 19.1 with elitebook 840 g3

Post by athi » Wed Apr 17, 2019 3:13 pm

I have a hp elitebook 840 g3 with n75 01.38 bios. It came with windows 10 and I am trying to install linux mint 19.1 on it and cannot get it to recognize either live install usb or live install dvd in an external dvd reader. I was able to install linux mint on a hp elitebook g1, with latest bios, without any issue and it is blazing fast.

Read about some issues that the hp uefi bios have with linux installation. I have tried disabling secure boot, disabling uefi boot and was not able to get the laptop to recognize either the usb drive or dvd drive. Any help would be appreciated.

Edit to add hardware spec: HP Elitebook 840 G3 14", i5 6300U 2.4 GHz processor, 16gb ram, 256gb SSD

Yeah, UEFI can be a PITA...

Sometimes the USB medias don't boot.
There are several ways to create a boot USB media from an ISO. There are tools for Windows (rufus? and I believe HP has an old USB formatting tool?) and Linux Mint has it's own USB media creator tool, as long with unetbootin you can install on the live boot media if you can manage to boot it from another machine and get on the internet...

(I feel dizzy like a cat maniacally chasing it's own tail... )
Bye for now,

I prefer Etcher for burning ISOs.

Sorry for the late reply, I was out of town over the Easter weekend with iffy internet.

Live USB was created with USB Image writer built into Linux Mint and confirmed working on Elitebook 840 G1. I also tried to boot with Windows 10 installation USB created with Rufus which was confirmed working on Elitebook 840 G1. Neither bootable media was recognized by the bios on the Elitebook 840 G3.

What gets me is the bios not even seeing the installation media and I cannot find how to enable the legacy boot option in the Elitebook 840 G3 bios.

This may not help, but nowadays "legacy boot" is more often referred to as CSM, as in Compatibility Support Module. See if your BIOS has an option going by one of those names.

Finally got the Elitebook 840 G3 to boot from bootable USB from both Rufus and Linux Image Writer. Found some answers from the HP support forum:
https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook- ... -p/5545230
https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktops- ... p/5491354I

If using Rufus to create USB, select GPT from Partition scheme menu (Target system should show UEFI (non CSM))

In bios setup:
Port Options: Set restricted USB devices to Allow all USB Devices, F10 to save setting
Secure Boot Configuration: Check Clear Secure Boot keys and uncheck Enable MS UEFI CA Key, F10 to save setting. Enter number in Secure boot screen after reboot.
Secure Boot Configuration: Set Configure Legacy Support and Secure Boot to Legacy Support Enable and Secure Boot Disable, F10 to save setting
Reboot
If successful, Startup Menu, Boot Menu should now show the bootable USB installer

Thank you all for your help.

Glad you could work around your issued and be able to install Mint!

What a chaotic configuration just to boot from USB... What happened to the old "piano play" with Esc, F2, F4, F8, F10 and F12 at boot time? Generally one of those would get me somewhere...

I agree. I found it quite stunning.

This is the first PC/laptop that I worked on with this convoluted UEFI bios, all the others were simple legacy or UEFI boot. Hopefully, this is not a trend.

Hopefully, this is not a trend.
Less than a year ago I bought a €300 Celeron laptop with a great screen, 6GB of RAM and 128GB crazy fast + 32GB SSD. I needed a new toy and I couldn't resist this one.

After days of struggling to understand the UEFI "BIOS" (you really need to be a hardware engineer to understand all those complex settings), I could not get LMDE2 to boot on it from USB. I managed to restore a backup and then install LMDE3 to make it boot.
A long time after I realized I just cannot make LMDE2 to boot in there, the bootloader and also GRUB seem to be incompatible. (I have to use LMDE3's GRUB)

And some months later I'm messing with the BIOS and my screen never turned on after it. Neither the external one. I sent it for repairing under the warranty and the very same day it came back from repair, I do it again.........
Looking at the screen from an angle, when hitting my phone's flash light on it, I could see there were visuals on the screen, but no light at all. Zero. Booting from LMDE3's USB produced no visuals, but if you waited for some minutes, the screen came back! Until you press any key or touch the touchpad... FFFFFUUUUUUUU!!!!!

Tried to reinstall Windows from it's own made recovery USB, and it failed. (actually twice, with V. 1803 and 1809) :? I know it's Windows, but...

So there I am calling customer support service asking them for hints as I was 'blind' on my computer and couldn't navigate the BIOS in order to reset it or load some configuration because it was not loading the keyboard :| , and they recommended me to plug in a USB keyboard and press F4 + F10. And voilá... BIOS resetted and screen working.

So, talking about chaotic UEFI 'BIOSes'' trends... :| I'm gonna kill myself. (be right back...)
Bye for now,
Bruno

Worked on a few laptops with bad backlight, each took a while to figured out that the LCD is bad since there is no indication that LCD is bad. I was then able to plug in an external monitor to work on until I was able to get a new screen. Good times.

Research online found that UEFI implementations by various OEM varies from usable to obtuse or chaotic. Looks like non-windows users are in for some exciting time.
