New software update launched several screens I didnt understand

Post by carum carvi » Fri Jun 14, 2019 9:21 am

Did some updates and to my surprise I got some popup screens giving me options to choose from. I didnt understand any of it. I just clicked next at every pop up screen (2 or 3 in total).

I saw mentioned something about "openvpn" and something about giving permission to "restart" something.

Hope I didnt mess up anything. This is the first time I ever encountered such pop up screens with options during a regular software update. I did press the HELP tab, but the info inside that HELP tab only confused me more.

Anyone can inform me, what these popup screens with OpenVPN were all about? And have I messed up something by clicking next, without selecting any options for restarting something...?

I have LinuxMint 19 Cinnamon. All updates installed. No other add ons installed beside Ublock origin, but I doubt that is important information...

Hi,
Yeah - I just got the OpenVPN one as well.
If you don't use a VPN then don't worry.
If your internet works then fine. If not, then post back and someone will help you. Probably.

I had the same pop ups, and like you was a little surprised. I hesitated , then allowed it to update - which it did without any further issues.

Hi there, gittiest person in the world, (great name),

As you can see my internet connection is working fine. So no problems? Did you select something in these pop up screens to restart something or did you select NEXT NEXT NEXT, as I have done?

Ok, Derrick, thx for reassuring reply. You were a bit baffled as well. I was too. I know a girlfriend who wont understand what to do with these pop up screens either. I better call her to let her know in advance she neednt worry and she just has to press NEXT at everything.

i just wiped my windows 10 system and installed mint 19, again. i'm done with windows for good this time! stupid "feature" updates that wreck everything!!

anyway, upon installing mint, i saw those 2 pop ups also. have never seen such a thing. have mint on 3 other machines that were installed some time ago. haven't updated those yet to see if pop up occurs there.

don't remember if first pop up was about anything vpn but second one was about restarting services on which i clicked for it to restart. after installing all the updates required from a fresh install, i got error that they didn't install. 2 messages were in the synaptic updater that said failed to install updates and that i had 1 broken package. ran the install again without refreshing and they all installed and had no broken packages.

didn't have any issues installing mint on other machines or this one when i installed it previously before reinstalling windows 10.

just thought i'd put my 2 cents in on this! :)

I use OpenVPN so there was a bit of hesitation, but it still works.

I just go with the 'click next to continue' and hope for the best

The message about restarting services - I clicked to delay it as the computer was doing something that I didn't want interrupted. I haven't rebooted yet so can't say whether or not that one is good. Hope it is :P

Thanks for posting this thread so I didn't have to. :)
Had the same pop-ups happen and just clicked next to get through them. So far no problems.

I think my update was for openssl, but I got the same pop up box that confused me. :? I checked the restart box, no problems so far. Hope it stays that way.

Reading this thread, I've got a feeling I may soon get a call from a couple friends who have a Windows PC which I converted to Linux Mint 19. If so, I hope they don't make me drive by their place...it's so out of my way.

Hi.

The only popup asking whether I wanted to permit or not to permit something was the one to be seen in the screenshot below:

Image
(click screenshot to enlarge. Press <alt><cursor left> to return here.)

By the way, I ticked (enabled) the option to permit automatic service restart after package upgrade.

Did not get any more popups requesting me to decide something.

Regards,
Karl

The number of pop-ups depend on the number of affected packages (services?) during the update. I've got two pop-ups on one machine, and a single pop-up on the other.

Hi, mediclaser.

You must be right. Just checked the changelog of libssl1.1 (openssl 1.1.1)
openssl (1.1.1-1ubuntu2.1~18.04.2) bionic; urgency=medium

* Cherrypick upstream patch to fix ca -spkac output to be text again.
LP: #1828215
* Cherrypick upstream patch to prevent over long nonces in ChaCha20-Poly1305
CVE-2019-1543
* Bump major version of OpenSSL in postinst to trigger services restart
upon upgrade. Many services listed there must be restarted when
upgrading 1.1.0 to 1.1.1. LP: #1832522
The last section tells that the ability to restart the SSL service automatically after package upgrade has been added in version 1.1.1.

If you permit automatic service restart, SSL connections might be briefly interrupted, I assume.
If you do not permit automatic service restart, you will have to restart it yourself later on, else it will happen on reboot only (obviously).

Cheers,
Karl

I still dont understand why this update is so important that it has to ask for an automatic restart with the help of a pop up screen?

When a new kernel is installed there arent any such pop up screens that offer an automatic restart either. And a new kernel needs a restart to take effect as well. Why is it different in this case? And can we expect more of these popups to occur in the future? I am just wondering if anybody could shed some more light on this rather odd update behaviour...

Carum carvi,
this is only about restarting a service, after the software package has been upgraded. This is not about rebooting.

Karlchen, thanks for your detailed posts and explanation. Reassures me that everything is in order. There probably is an explanation why they choose to offer this option of restarting via a popscreen, but it is confusing for newbies like myself.

ya, i just got on one of my mint machines that has been installed for quite some time and only got the one pop up asking about restarting services. checked the box to allow it and everything is running fine.

think i got the 2 pop ups yesterday on that machine because it was a new install. don't use any vpn services though, so wasn't really worried about that one.

Hi, carum carvi.

I cannot answer for the developers or package maintainers. Yet, as I understand it, the situation is like this:

You upgrade the software package of a service. The service is still loaded in memory (old software version).
You either have to restart the service in order to load the new service software. Or you allow the old service to remain in memory till next reboot, whenever this will be.
Seems for some services the rule was: do not restart the service after package upgrade, let the old software go on till next reboot.
Now the developers suggest to switch to: restart service after package upgrade immediately.
The user can decide to agree or to stick with old procedure. This should be a one time decision for the current upgrade and future upgrades.

Hope I understood it right.

The OP was about a few extra windows with choices. That was what triggered the post.
Most of us had the same (what a great feeling to be connected to you all that way) updates and windows.
A fair amount of you will have known exactly what the score was and a few of us new ones will have been puzzled.
Usually it goes on quite happily in the background with a happy tick at the end.
No problem - it was just about restarting a service (program running in the background).

It suddenly dawned on me that this pop up screen confusion might be something characteristic for the Linux OS specifially. But I am just guessing here, since I still consider myself a newbie.

BUT, the thing with Linux is that they always want the user to be in control. Which I consider to be a GOOD thing. Windows on the other hand, wouldnt even have thought of offering this possibility of asking the user if they want to enable or disable automatic restart of certain services. Windows would have made ANY changes without offering choices.

Windows is made for the masses. Linux OS, in general, is made for the happy knowledgeable few. Linux Mint hangs somewhere in between. Linux Mint wants to be the most accessible Linux OS availble. AND IT IS. But, sometimes it is still typically a programmers OS, in which case certain options are tailored towards more experienced users, instead of utterly inexperienced users like myself.

Thankfully there is always this forum with many helpful experienced forummembers. And my golden rule about NOT to worry, is when there are NO alarming posts to be read when I post a question. This is such a case. Laughing out loud....
