Easy way to open Camera and dir with photos

Post by jamesd1 » Fri Jun 14, 2019 12:34 pm

So I plug in a Camera and it shows up in the file manager and I have to click and open a directory and another and another to get to the location where the pictures I just took are visible and can be copied. If I crease a bookmark to that dir it does not work when I later reconnect the the camera.

How to automate moving pictures from my camera or at least create a directory that accessing them from session to session.
Thanks,

James

Hi again,
Have you mounted the camera using the UUID settings or just let Mint decide which device it should open as?
If you use the UUID then it might help.

I let Mint do it automatically. What is UUID and how do I use it?
Thanks,

James

If you go into the Disks applet (Menu / type in disks ) which is very handy - I have it on the panel -
pick the correct 'disk' (your camera) in either the graphic or the left sidebar
Click the cogs
Edit mount options
Switch off User Session Defaults
Tick Show in User Interface

What does it say for the Mount point and Identify as?

Have you considered using a photo application such as Pix? Set it to be the default picture application and it will detect your camera automatically, open the appropriate camera folder, and offer to download the photos to your Pictures folder, or any sub-folder you choose.

I use Pix but don't see how to set the defaults you speak of as related it to the Camera. I did set Pix as the default for pictures but the file browser comes up when I plug in the camera.
Thanks,

James

I have my Preferred Application for Photos set to Image Viewer, (not Pix,) and it works as I described above.

These work in a terminal -

Code: Select all

gphoto2 --list-files
gphoto2 --get-all-files
gphoto2 --delete-all-files
You might need to

Code: Select all

sudo apt install gphoto2

Could not detect any camera
*** Error (-105: 'Unknown model') ***
Thanks,

I guess that's correct, it is "unknown": what kind of camera is it?

Anyway, an internet search on that error message might help. One thing is to try it as root/sudo as a test.

Phone is Kyocera VM KYO C6725

Using the list command as root did not change the error.

So it's not a camera after all, it's a phone. Pity you did not mention that earlier.

That should have been in your first post. We are NOT talking about a camera here, but a phone. Two different beasities even though they can do similar things. That's a but like asking expecting us to know where to click to adjust screen resolution when you neglect to mention that you are running Windwoes.

Sorry, I think of that phone as "camera" as that is its main use.

I found a great applet called 'Places Centre' (not Places), which is very configurable if you want it to be.
So, download the applet, right-click it in the panel, 'Configure', User,
in the Custom Places, type in the folder you wish to navigate to,
for instance
/home/peter/Documents/telephone bills/
or
/mnt/phone/Media/DCIM/00001/ (or whatever your folder is)
It is case sensitive.

If it doesn't always point to the folder, then you need to get the phone to mount at the same point but using the UUID in the Disks program. Post back if that is a problem.

I found it here: https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/applets/view/128

Is that the one you mean? How do you install it?
Thanks,

No, simpler than that.
Right click the panel, + applets to the panel, Download, scroll down to Places Centre, +

Edit:
Yes it is the applet that you posted a link to. Just meant not to download from anywhere else except the panel applet downloader.

In my system, Linux Mint 19.1 MATE, Tessa (Ubuntu; bionic) there is no "Places Centre" listed.

I'm also using Tessa.

Did you get the from the Applets menu through the System settings and click the righthand tab that says Download?
