missing desktop icons

Post by dexl »

Fresh LM19.1 Mate install, on running all updates and rebooting all desktop icons are gone and I don't know how to get them back. Desktop folder in Caja shows all my desktop files intact. Any clues? Thank you.

Try running this in a terminal window:

Code: Select all

dconf write /org/mate/desktop/background/show-desktop-icons true
If that does not help make sure that this command's output actually points to the folder you are expecting to see the contents of:

Code: Select all

xdg-user-dir DESKTOP

Holy macro!

Hi all, this is my first post on this forum,

I'd like to thank you for posting this solution, this worked like charm to me

Yes, after a system-wide update my -almost- fresh 19.2 Mint Mate linux had this issue.

No desktop icons AND no left/right mouse events on desktop background.

The first command on terminal, normal user, did the trick.

Consider investigating (and make this thread sticky?? - or list this thing on the known issues) on this issue since it a silly bug. THANKS

Well, I gotta say, that did the trick for me as well. After pasting the first and the second command, the icons returned. I just hope they're gonna stay there once I reboot. :) THANK YOU.

You are both quite welcome. I have no idea how you "lost" the icons so I cannot say if it will happen again. The only application I know of that has a toggle for this is mate-tweak, so unless you used that to disable the icons I have no idea what happened to you guys.

No intentional tweaks whatsoever, as I wrote in my first post it happened on a fresh installation of LM19.1 Mate Tessa.

Upon reboot the icons are gone... is there a way to make the solution you posted permanent?

OK, I wanted to try the same commands to get my icons back and now it just doesn't work anymore... :( I hope it's not a one-time fix

Settings not saving usually means you messed around with sudo where you shouldn't have, run this and then the fix again and see if the setting persist across reboots now:

Code: Select all

sudo chown -Rc $USER:$USER ~
From the "fix" you only need the dconf command by the way, the second one was just to see if you were actually looking at the correct folder, but that wasn't your problem.

I've had that happen a few times too. I opened my file manager to desktop folder, saw they were there, closed the file manager, and suddenly they were all there again on the desktop. Not sure why that works for me, but does. I thought maybe it was because I'd done an version upgrade and not clean new install.

I noticed that this might happen if you set Automatic DPI detection on, for fonts. On my desktop it sets it to a higher value (106) and seems that desktop icons sometimes can go off screen with this settings. When you open Desktop folder in Caja, it also refreshes the desktop which can also be done pressing F5 when it has the focus.

You can do the same fix if you download and use Dconf editor.

Thank you. Icons are back again. If I don't write here again, it will mean the issue is solved. Rebooting now... :D

I honestly don't know what's going on... after rebooting the icons were there. But after rebooting again, the icons are gone once more! It seems that anything I try, works only temporarily, I swear it was due to LM updates that things got crazy, it's weird... :(

I've just downloaded dconf-editor and searched for "icons" and clicked OFF (because it was ON) and ON again next to show desktop icons. The icons are back. I wonder what will happen when I reboot....

Icons are gone again... I guess I will need to do a fresh install and forget about trying to fix it. :(

You could just try a fresh user profile to see if that makes a difference.

I like that idea. It will prove if system problem, or only a single user problem. Might save a reinstall.

I have the same problem and tried all suggestions here. They don't work for me. The icons will only show up if I go into Caja, open the Desktop folder, and then close Caja. Then my desktop is as expected, with icons and files. It's weird.

Hi RienP,
Probably best you start another post as your problem might be different.
No harm in referencing this post or what you've tried though.
Also paste the terminal output of the following as the chances are you'll get asked for it anyway.

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz

Bonjour,
