Cannot install bootloader

Post by andperry256 » Fri Sep 13, 2019 10:06 am

I am trying to install Mint 19.1 from a live CD on to a USB flash drive. I have done this successfully in the past although not on the particular computer in question. Towards the end of the procedure I am getting an error screen to say that the bootloader cannot be installed at the specified location and provides a number of options. I have attached a photo of the screen. The problem is that at this point the installation program becomes unresponsive and I cannot proceed any further. I have run this process twice with exactly the same result. Can anyone help please?

Thanks,

Andrew.

that picture is suggesting SDc5 which is wrong:
- - you should be Installing to SDc only - - not to any partition, as such.

Can't tell where you're going sideways, but you might try one of the methods described in my tutorial on full install to USB drive.

If /dev/sdc5 is an ESP partition, then that's where it would go, otherwise it would go to the MBR of the disk (i.e., /dev/sdc). So if /dev/sdc is a bootable disk, change the boot entry to /dev/sdc and see if that works.
I feel more like I do than I did when I got here.

You can just tell grub to install to a drive and it will work in most cases, UEFI or not. There are only a few exceptions when grub needs to be installed to a partition

What kind of partitioning would this usb flash drive have? MBR, GPT, LOOP?
