What commands or GUI to see what crashes (Event Viewer)

Post by gittiest personITW » Fri Sep 13, 2019 2:51 pm

Hi,
I'm guessing that there are quite a few ways to check out system logs if there are problems, such as
systemd command
and some files in /var/log

Is there a list of commands that the user can use to access problematic 'events' logs?
Or to put the question another way, what terminal commands or GUI programs would you use to troubleshoot problems?

Thanks

ps
Just a generic question - no specific problem

Probably
dmesg
journalctl (search in this forum for examples)
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
Your data and OS are backed up....right?

Nice one you two.
Any more suggestions are welcome also. This is very handy to know.

There's no real Linux equivalent to Event Viewer (finding exact equivalents to Windows programs is usually fruitless unless it's been ported) but this is worth reading:

Logs is the menu if you have it, which you should it comes pre-installed. it's gnome-logs in Terminal and the most important thing to you is in the Important tab.

dmesg | grep -i "error\|warn\|fail" you can add to this list let's say ipv6 or microcode with \|ipv6

Cheers guys.
Those are also excellent answers. I'll leave the topic running for now in case there are other ideas. The more the merrier.

What's wrong with dmesg -l alert, crit, err, warn which doesn't actually rely on the strings "error" "warn" or "fail" appearing in a line?

I get 7 lines out of your grep command and 40 out of dmesg -l.

Snippet from dmesg --help

Code: Select all

steve@steve-Inspiron-5580:~$ dmesg --help

Usage:
 dmesg [options]

Display or control the kernel ring buffer.

Options:
....
-l, --level <list> restrict output to defined levels
....

Supported log levels (priorities):
   emerg - system is unusable
alert - action must be taken immediately
    crit - critical conditions
     err - error conditions
    warn - warning conditions
notice - normal but significant condition
    info - informational
   debug - debug-level messages

Also look at System Reports from the menu that provides crash dumps.

there's nothing wrong with your command smurphos, it's just not the one i posted :)
personally i get tired of logs now. been following them since forever and if they are so important why do developers still not take care of the issues in .xsession-errors

@ trytip

exactly! as long as my stuff is running like it should, could care less about the log files. trying to "fix" any of them usually leads to messing something up!

personally i get tired of logs now. been following them since forever and if they are so important why do developers still not take care of the issues in .xsession-errors
Well, I don't think there's anybody in the Mint team who really cares, that's why the technical debt is rather high in some places.

I eliminated nearly all of those errors and warnings from the tools I forked in my PPA, but some are caused by upstream libraries and cannot be helped.

But as a pure user there is nothing much you can do except maybe create bug reports, feel free to ignore them otherwise.

@ trytip

exactly! as long as my stuff is running like it should, could care less about the log files. trying to "fix" any of them usually leads to messing something up!
Hi,
For my own system there are 'errors' all over the place but I wouldn't expect that to be a problem necessarily. I would be amazed if there is any system that doesn't flag in error in some log or other.
For troubleshooting other peoples' systems though then it might help to figure out a fix or at least narrow down the problem(s).

i didn't have these errors before updating to 19.2. so now i decided to compress and delete cinnamon-settings-daemon-mouse.desktop along with some other
@gm10
remember that child error in synaptic back a few mint upgrades ago? the one that stayed for soooo looong in that terminal every update we made, the first line we all saw ? why was it there for so long? did developers not see this and say, "hey maybe we should get rid of that or make it so people can't see it, huh."

 and OMG what in the world does this mean
Please ask your system administrator to enable user sharing.

You can have an answer - you are the Administrator. It's grumbling because you have the Nemo Share extension enabled in Nemo but you are not sharing anything... Share something or disable me dammit!

Has that actually been fixed? I wouldn't know because I wasn't running Mint's modified Synaptic - the original version never had that error. But as I said, I genuinely do not think it is a priority for the team to fix what eventually are cosmetic bugs (or even non-critical bugs - there are so many long standing functional bugs in Mint after all).

i do know that answer but i'm speaking in terms of the new user. if i'm the administrator why do i need to put in a password to update my system? even a simple command like apt update require me to punch in extra keys on the keyboard. this administrator removed all the passwords he could over here, but every update returns me to editing my
/usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.debian.apt.policy again. a new user has no idea about cosmetic logs. why is the system looking for cosmetic bugs if they are to be ignored? seems to me that's just wasted resources

last night i was updating my kernels and get this. in the middle of the initramfs regeneration i open nemo and rightclick on something. as soon as i did that the system snapped and kicked me back to the login :| it's a shame this is caused by a mint theme. needless to say i had to timeshift back since the kernel update never finished, so now when i update i have to stand still and not touch anything?

The new user won't play around on the command line or dig through hidden logs, and on Windows you also need to authenticate to install software, so those are non-issues. Besides, you can actually install updates without authenticating on vanilla Mint, another long-standing bug. Bonus points if you know how.

Nemo segfaults if you right-click in the tree view, among other things. Does it take the desktop environment with it on CInnamon if you do that?
