microphone total problem on Tessa

Hello,

I think there must some core problem with my Tessa install, I cannot record with microphone. I bought a professional mic with a big jack, converted to mini-jack with a cable, plugged in in the correct SoundBlaster entry, and no acquisition. I try to change all settings in the sound control interface, it does not work. I have a 2.1 working sound system, a SB Live! Audigy X-Fi series sound card.

Never had mic issues on Win7, not to say it is better lol.

If by chance an expert could help me out, I would be very greatful, it is so annoying to no be able to record sounds, to play a CS Source game without mic :-))

Hi criptal, and welcome to the forum.

Let's get a look at some of your specs. Please post the output from running the following commands in the terminal: inxi -Fxz, aplay -l, dmesg | grep snd and pacmd list-cards

Those outputs should give us an idea on how to get your mic working.

Frist, Thank you for your kind assistance :-)
Problem 1 solved, I set the Digital autio for the mic and CS Source started rocking again ;-)
Remains problem with the recoding on the audio in.

Okay, I've not had a lot of experience helping with X-Fi cards, but I think we can get this solved.

The first thing I want you to try is install PulseAudio Volume Control and open it to the Input Devices tab. Your card has several input selections available and hopefully we just need to select the correct one. When the mic is unplugged, everything available in the dropdown should probably say Some Device (unplugged). Then when you plug the mic in, one of those options should change, no longer saying (unplugged). It may set itself for input automatically, or you may need to select it yourself. Also make sure the check mark all the way on the right is highlighted. That makes it the default input device. Now just make sure it's not muted, and the volume is at least above 50% (75% might be better) then test the mic.

If that doesn't help, let's make sure we're on the same page. With what software are you trying to record? Have you checked the mic/input settings inside that software? After the above steps have been done, I'd hope a "default" setting should work.

Thank you for your help.
I could find an option where I had some slight input, but when I recorded with Audacity I got blank constantly, I'm not sur in english, but I mean the constant white noise or something like that.
Any clues MrEen?

Just above the main window in Audacity, do the 4 boxes show ALSA - default - 2(Stereo) - default?

The second one is the most important. If it does say default, let me see the output of pacmd list-sources

Also, up above that, if you click on "Click to Start Monitoring" then tap on the mic a few times, do you see the the horizontal bars moving as you tap?

Try this. On the Input Devices tab of PulseAudio Volume Control change the port from Analog Input / Line In / Line In to Microphone

Then in the terminal run arecord -d 20 test-mic.wav and start speaking into the mic. When the 20 seconds are up, run aplay test-mic.wav then tell me what you heard.

Hello MrEen,
I recorded, the result is a robot filtered voice.
In general, all sounds are distorted for 5 seconds, after it is ok. I think I have a driver problem, because it is general.
This particuliar recording is also distorted, robot filtered style.

Try this:
If you're experiencing glitches, skips, pops or crackling in your audio playback, it's quite possibly caused by the timer-based scheduling pulseaudio now uses. Disable timer-based scheduling this way:
Users of 18.3 and earlier versions of Mint type this in the terminal: gksudo xed /etc/pulse/default.pa
Users of 19 and later versions of Mint type this in the terminal: xed admin:///etc/pulse/default.pa
Find the line that says load-module module-udev-detect and change it to load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0
Save the file, then run pulseaudio -k in the terminal and test your sound
Then run the recording test again.

Thank you. Actually, I already found this on the original thread. It solved the general playback stuttering issues, but it doesn't change my recording issue.

I think it comes from the audio kernel driver. I have a good soundcard but the linux driver is not 100% good.

Hi again, criptal.

I would suggest changing from Microphone to Analog Input / Microphone / Microphone and try the test again. Also, paste any output the terminal gives you while testing. In fact, before making the change, run the test and copy the terminal output, then make the change, run the test and copy the output. Paste both outputs back here along with your perception of the sound on the second test (i.e. also robot sounding?)

Please add the output of inxi -Fxz to the list. It's possible a kernel upgrade may help. In fact, you should at least upgrade to the latest 4.15 kernel regardless.
