[SOLVED] Can't start Linux Mint Applications that uses root

Post by gulas »

Hi, when I try to start some mint application that uses root priviletes, I get an error. Example:

Code: Select all

~ $ mintsources
Error checking for authorization com.linuxmint.mintsources: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message recipient disconnected from message bus without replying

Code: Select all

~ $ pkexec gufw
Error checking for authorization org.freedesktop.policykit.exec: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message recipient disconnected from message bus without replying
It seems to be a problem with the policikit although the service is running:

Code: Select all

~ $ ps axu | grep -v grep | grep policykit
gustavo+ 15849 0.0 0.0 325708 20336 ? Sl 11:07 0:00 /usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1
root 17101 0.0 0.0 282296 8564 ? Ssl 11:25 0:00 /usr/lib/policykit-1/polkitd --no-debug
Info about my PC

Code: Select all

~ $ inxi -Fxznr

I don't understand what you are doing? Running as root? If sudo works in terminal, then root is working.

Sorry, maybe I haven't expressed myself well. When I try to open any application that requires root permissions from the menu (gfwu, synaptic, et...), the window that asks me for the sudo password simply does not open. To simulate and be able to see the error, I use pkexec from console and see the error it returns. If I use sudo from the console (sudo gfwu), no problem

Thanks!

OK, I understand the problem now. Sadly I'm unable to help solve it. Maybe a developer of system might see it and comment. Is this something happening from the time of install? Or just started? Did you mess around in the Users & Groups area? If so, maybe some group change you made.

See a systemd error in pastebin.

Code: Select all

error sending to systemd: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Process org.freedesktop.systemd1 exited with status 1
 dbus-update-activation-environment: setting GTK_MODULES=gail:atk-bridge
dbus-update-activation-environment: warning: error sending to systemd: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Process org.freedesktop.systemd1 exited with status 1
dbus-update-activation-environment: setting QT_ACCESSIBILITY=1
dbus-update-activation-environment: warning: error sending to systemd: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Process org.freedesktop.systemd1 exited with status 1

I can say I was not happy about them going to systemd, which version 17.3 didn't use. Maybe something in systemctl command can find and fix it.

Ok .... Solved ...
When I was messing with the xrdp and the VNC server, I created this file "/etc/polkit-1/localauthority.conf.d/02-allow-colord.conf" in a desperate attempt server work ...
It is seen that the file (or rather its content) did not sit well to polkit and was not able to boot.

I didn't remember creating it, luckily we have the reverse search of the console.

Lesson learned: Don't play if you don't know what you're really playing because you can break something else.

Thanks Spearmint2 for making me think about what I had modified !!
