Pulseaudio detecting my mic as headphones

Post by citruskoala+ » Fri Oct 11, 2019 6:21 pm

When I plug in my microphone (https://www.amazon.com/Acoustic-Contact ... B06ZYH4RRN) which i have plugged into a 1/4 inch to 3.5mm jack converter (https://www.amazon.com/MOBOREST-Adapter ... 07DD4FTLW/) into my computer, it treats it as if I have headphones plugged in, and wont record audio. I have tried using hdajackretask but that hasn't solved this either.

Hi citruskoala+, and welcome to the forum.

Please paste the output from running the following terminal commands: inxi -Fxz and aplay -l

I assume you have a single combo port for headphone/headset/microphone, correct?

EDIT: Let's add dmesg | grep snd to the list please.

Okay, this should work. Ignore the fact it says Dell in the model name.

In the terminal, enter xed admin:///etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf then enter your password and when the file opens scroll to the bottom and add this new line:

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel model=dell-headset-multi
Save and close the file and ignore the warnings the terminal spits out. Reboot and you should be able to use the mic.

Okay. Your default source is incorrect. Run pacmd set-default-source alsa_input.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo in the terminal to correct that.

I probably gave you the wrong edit for alsa-base.conf. The one I gave works for most, but probably not for Chromebooks. Try this line instead of the other one:

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel model=alc-sense-combo
Save the file, reboot and test again.

Still doing the same thing, but I just noticed that it detects the 1/4 inch to 3.5mm adapter as headphones, regardless of anything being plugged into the adapter.

Yeah, I don't think that kind of plug can describe what is attached. It's the system detecting something is plugged in, and for some reason yours is always assuming headphones. Let's see the output of pacmd list-cards again with the new edit to alsa-base.conf applied.

Hrmm. Looks like it didn't change anything.

Do these return anything: cat /sys/class/sound/hwC1D0/driver_pin_configs, cat /sys/class/sound/hwC1D0/user_pin_configs, cat /sys/class/sound/hwC1D0/init_verbs or cat /sys/class/sound/hwC0D0/hints?

All right, instead of trying a ton of different things, let's get most of it in one fell swoop. In the terminal run cd ~ followed by wget http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh -O alsa-info.sh && bash alsa-info.sh

That'll run a script to get a lot of your sound settings all in one place. The script will ask to save locally or upload the results. It's easier for me if you choose to upload and paste the URL it'll give you at the end. If you want to save a local copy as well, you can run the script again with just bash alsa-info.sh

Have you rebooted since making the edit to alsa-base.conf? I do see the change to that file, but don't see any changes that I would have thought it would have made.

I also see you have installed JACK. That could have created some other config files the alsa-info script doesn't look for. Examples are ~/.pulse or ~/.asoundrc. Are either of those hidden files in your home folder? Running ls -la ~/ in the terminal will show them.

Another thing I see is the mic is muted (even if not detected) so run alsamixer -c1 in the terminal. Muted columns have MM at the bottom. Use the arrow keys to select the column, the m key to toggle mute, and the up/down arrow keys to raise/lower the levels. Also Press F4 while there to check the Capture column.

The weird thing is your dmesg output shows both headphones and mic. But there's only one port, correct? Maybe we need to change the alsa-base.conf edit once more. I have another option to try, but I'd like to wait for your answers first. Ahh to heck with that. The new option is options snd-hda-intel model=alc283-headset

There is no .pulse or .asoundrc, but there is .jackdrc (file, not folder). The laptop does have an internal mic which i keep muted unless i am using it, so i am not sure if that alsa-base.conf edit would do anything. Also alsamixer recognized the mic being as headphones (i tested by plugging and unplugging it).

Well, let's hope options snd-hda-intel model=alc283-headset in alsa-base.conf makes a difference.

Essentially, you should at least see a Headset option in the sound settings, and hopefully a Headset Mic in the input settings.

It seems as though nothing has changed except that when i try to record audio in audacity with my internal laptop mic (regardless of if the mic for the guitar is plugged in) it records complete silence, but in pulseaudio volume control its still showing my internal mic input and it says its my internal mic, no indication about a headset mic in the input or output tabs in pulseaudio volume control. (edit) and I DID restart my computer

I'm not sure why these edits aren't adding new options. Here's a new script that is more complete:

Code: Select all

curl https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/raw/master/src/utils/pa-info?inline=false | bash | nc termbin.com 9999
Just paste the termbin.com URL when it's done.
