SOLVED:Can't install on HP Omen Laptop

Post by Webheadjunky » Sat Oct 12, 2019 1:21 pm

Hi

Hope you can help

Have tried various things including, shrinking SSD drive to create unallocated space, disable boot security, enable virtualisation, set boot order to DVD then hard drive etc

Have inherited what is a fine looking powerful machine but it is clearly not linux friendly

Up until now had been using linux alongside windoze for around 10 years and decided Mint Cinammon is my favourite

Install just hangs at logo
Took a picture of the screen with ny phone from compatibility mode that shows some info but need to resize as too big to attach

Will update with picture later

Grateful for your advice
Cheers
R

Please post make and exact model of machine. There are quite a few different version of HP Omen that I found online and they look to be high-end gaming laptops. These tends to be more difficult to install or run Mint on due to driver/configuration issues.
Mint Mate 19.1. Main rig is HP 800G2 I5 6500 16GB ram, 120GB boot drive, 2x3TB, 1x4TB data drives. Oldest rig is Mate 18.3 on Dell D620 with 32bits core duo.

If you can boot into Mint live USB/DVD, ruun below commands in Terminal (ctrl+alt+t) to output system information and post results.

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz

Code: Select all

mokutil --sb-state

Ok, you cannot boot into Mint live session. Try adding "nomodeset" boot parameter:
- Start, wait for GRUB menu and select advance option (No GRUB? Press and hold left 'Shift' key during startup).
- Press the 'e' key
- Use the arrow keys to go down to the line starting with 'linux' and add "nomodeset" parameter after "quiet splash" to make "quiet splash nomodeset".
- Press ctrl+x to boot

Let us know if you cannot get into Mint session with "nomodeset" boot parameter. Otherwise, run commands to get system information and post results.

Good, getting some progress.

If not done already, disable UEFI secure boot and see if you can fully boot. If still not working, do the "nomodeset" boot parameter again from the GRUB menu, this should get you to boot fully into Mint. Then run Timeshift to set a restore point so you can roll back changes and check in Driver Manager to see if there are any recommended drivers. If you still have issues, try upgrading kernel to the latest supported 5 series kernel and check for drivers again.
