Disable sounds via CL

Post by ChrisKeefe » Sat Oct 12, 2019 9:56 pm

Hi folks,
I wipe/re-install Mint semi-regularly, so have automated most of my configuration. I've been unable to find a way to disable the startup, tiling & snapping, and switching workpace sounds from the command line. I've poked around in gsettings a bit with no luck, and was able to locate the sound files, but would prefer to toggle sounds off, rather than delete files.

The sound-setting GUI described here (viewtopic.php?f=208&t=103945&p=588857&h ... ne#p588857) works great. Can anyone point me toward whichever file/schema the on/off switches adjust?

Thanks, Chris
p.s. bonus points for breadcrumbs toward the "window-tiling" and "hot corners" settings files...

Note: if this kind of automation is not possible, that's also fine. If so, I'd love to know why that's the case.

Hi ChrisKeefe.

I don't know for sure, but think it might be possible to do this.

I'm on Xfce, so I don't have the options you do, but what I'd try is this:

1. In the terminal enter

Code: Select all

gsettings list-schemas | grep sound
2. With each result, then try

Code: Select all

gsettings list-recursively any.line.from.previous.output
3. Look to see if anything looks like what you're looking for. I'm thinking org.cinnamon.desktop.sound is what you're looking to set some keys for, but I have no way of testing that. You might want to grab a screenshot of any key settings before changing them so you can change them back if things go south.

Hope that helps.

Looks like you might want to use dconf instead. See the accepted answer here: https://superuser.com/questions/1006983 ... mmand-line

Thanks for your comprehensive replies, @MrEen, and for gently reminding me that grep exists. :) Your first approach worked so well that playing with dconf hasn't been necessary.

The org.cinnamon.sounds schema holds all the keys I was looking for, so e.g. this disables the startup sound:

Code: Select all

gsettings set org.cinnamon.sounds login-enabled false
