Installing to second SSD

Post by shea1roh » Mon Oct 21, 2019 4:37 pm

I currently am dual booting Win 10 & Linux Mint 19.2. I have a 1 tb hd that I carved off a partition for linux. However, the drive is getting full, so I am thinking of installing an M.2 ssd as a second drive. I would like to give Windows back the full hd, & install Linux onto the ssd. My question is, can I somehow move my linux install to the new ssd without having to reinstall it?

Hi, I have my system setup as Linux on M.2, and Windoes on another SSD. Select the system you want to boot too from the bios.

How does that answer the OP's need?

Don't answer that. It doesn't.

Sorry, I forgot. have a external drive or thumb drive and use Timeshift to backup your Linux installation. When you install Mint again, then use timeshift to restore your setting.

In all likelihood, you won't be able to do that. At least not in a reasonable timeframe and with any kind of ease. You will need a lot of command-line-fu to get it to work.

You have three basic choices, and all 3 involve a clean installation.

1) Clean install and set everything up from scratch.

2) Backup your current /home directory, including all the hidden files and directories. Perform step 1) then restore your backed up /home to the new installation. Finally, reboot.

3) Use a migration tool.

The 3rd option is highly recommended but the migration tool is not free. https://teejeetech.in/aptik-3/

It's $US25. It's value is the value you place on your time and your current setup.

If you go this route, follow these high-level steps:

1) Install and run Aptik from your current installation of linux.
2) Copy the files to the clean installation.
3) Install and run Aptik from your clean installation.

'Clean' here means freshly installed, and not updated.

Once that's done, you can delete linux from the other drive.

<facepalm>

That is very much presumptuous and most certainly will not work.

It won't restore snapshots from one installation to a different one. The snapshots, just like in Windwoes system restore, are intended to restore only the currently installed system to which the snapshot belongs.
