I hate ricing? Does this mean I'm turning into a grumpy old man?

Post by smurphos » Sat Nov 09, 2019 3:55 am

So only fairly recently I became aware of some folks (presumably young ones  ) referring to themselves as Ricers, or talking about Ricing their desktops. This had me mildly confused for a little while. I thought they were making a spectator sport of dumping their computers in a bathtub of water and then drying them out in a bucket of rice. But I then realised taking the context into account that they were talking about themeing or otherwise customising their desktops visually.

So off to the Urban Dictionary I go and I discover that R.I.C.E means Race Inspired Cosmetic Enhancement and it comes from the world of car customisation - i.e. To rice is to make an old banger look like a racing car, when mechanically it's still an old banger. From what i can make out in that context the term is often derogatory - e.g."That's just so rice" meaning "It's looks nice but it's a still a pile of cr*p"

So how did this term end up in use in the context of customising computer desktops?

I really dislike it - is my inability to happily assimilate new slang a sign of the imminent onset of grumpy old man syndrome (I'm mid forties)?

Hi smurphos
really dislike it - is my inability to happily assimilate new slang a sign of the imminent onset of grumpy old man syndrome (I'm mid forties)?
I've been fighting the "Grumpy Old Man" syndrome for about twenty some years.
Don't worry it will pass. I'm in my mid seventies. I learned to enjoy it! :?
I wish I could be in my mid forties with my past experiences to guide me.
Such things used to make me irate. Now not so much.
It rolls off my back like water off the back a of a duck in a pond.
As a member of the Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club I wasn't very popular back in the old days.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonkin_Gulf_Yacht_Club
The latest is being a Boomer
https://www.nbcnews.com/better/lifestyl ... cna1077261
I'm a boomer, also been called an old fart, etc. I still use a flip phone smaller than a credit card. Fits in my pocket easily and it won't butt dial anyone. It will get a text message for a confirmation code to access certain accounts and make voice and emergency 911 calls. It has no emojis, facebook, twitter, etc. what I consider, useless junk on it. I still get a lot of junk calls saying that my M$ machine is infected or I'm about to be be arrested for something or other.
Members of younger generations and some of my own say how can you still live with that? I say "It works for what I need"!

About new slang!
What concerns me is the proliferation of acronyms. :(
Reading some articles on line or even in news papers, magazines etc. I have to refer to a web site such as https://abbreviations.yourdictionary.co ... onyms.html to figure out what hell they are talking about.
My first personal experience with acronyms, way back when, was with LOL. I thought it meant "Lots Of Love", needlessly to say it didn't go over to well. It all got sorted out, she married me!

I guess you can call me a 'Happy Grumpy Old Man!' :D
PS (Post Script)
BTW (I think it means 'by the way') thank you for your help with my posts in Mint forums!

Probably, but I think we're the wrong crowd here to answer that. Thanks for teaching me that word though, now get off my lawn!

That's not the same meaning as the word in the subject line. I take it upon myself to never use the word in the subject line. There's enough of it in the world without me adding to it. Just something to think about.

Cheers.

I just can't stand to try to read the text of people that seemingly 'have' to use numbers as words, and abbreviate every other word in regular text conversation, that is, in game chat. Grrrrr! Just reporting on a pet peeve, that's all. I *will* put people on ignore that do this seemingly without thinking while online gaming or Instant Messaging. I know you guys would have to tease me here about that knee jerk reaction.

Don't fight it, instead you should embrace your inner grumpyness! You'll feel much better for it.

I think that's what we used to call All Show and No Go. And what that means is, if you are going to spend money on it, spend it under the hood first and not on the body.

By the way, I had never heard of "ricing" either so I guess I'm getting old too. A co-worker's daughter uses the term "T" when she talks or texts. It's the latest in slang. Her mother had no idea what she meant when she heard her daughter and a friend talking and her daughter asked, "Well, what's the T?" It means to give the details about a topic. It's short for the "truth" but I don't think the kids know that. It's just slang to them.

That is pretty much what I have always understood that it meant - i.e. Urban Dictionary definition
A person who makes unecessary modifications to their most often import car (hence the term "rice") to make it (mostly make it look) faster.

Txt spk! If you understand that, you're a kid, NOW GET OFF MY LAWN! Yes! I am a grumpy old man! I hate txt spk (text speak - for the uninitiated) with a passion. As do I, poor spelling and grammar. For those with English as a second, or more, language, that is forgiven, but, to those for whom English is your native tongue, USE IT!!! PROPERLY!!! Americans can also be forgiven for never having been taught how to spell properly. ;)
