Firefox Sync Service Maintenance since Friday? [resolved]

Post by karlchen » Sun Nov 10, 2019 6:50 pm

Hello, folks.

I first noticed the issue on one of my systems in the course of Friday, 08-Nov-2019.
Ever since my Firefox Sync has failed to really sync anything.
The corresponding error log files on each affected system in the profile subfolder ..../weave/logs/error-sync-<timestamp>.txt tell at their end:

Code: Select all

Sync.Service	DEBUG	Exception calling WrappedLock: Error: Login failed:
error.sync.reason.serverMaintenance(resource://services-sync/service.js:984:15)
JS Stack trace: onNotify@service.js:984:15
This suggests that the Firefox Sync Service should be in maintenance mode. For 3 days now?!

The page Mozilla - Cloud Services Status, however, keeps on telling that all services, including sync, were operational.

Now I wonder whether anyone else has noticed the same problem between Friday and today or whether the issue affects my systems only?

Best regards,
Karl

P.S.:
Please, note that each Firefox profile on each affected system (Mint, Ubuntu, Windows 7) has been set up separately and manually. No clone copies. This happened when FF 69 was released and FF on 32-bit systems started crashing regularly.
So relatively fresh profiles. Independent of each other.

Reason: [resolved] it was server maintenance only. Syncing again. ;-)

I have 18.3 Cinnamon and FF,
Win7 & FF,
Win10 & FF

so far, I have not noticed that sync is not working.

Hi, rene. Hi, AZgl1500.

Thanks for your feedback. :)

There are pieces of evidence that I have been affected by some local Mozilla server maintenance.
This morning my Firefoxes started fetching sync data from the Mozilla Sync service again and uploading such data to it.
No more new error-sync-<timestamp>.txt files in the Firefox weave/logs sub-directory.
Seems that the term error.sync.reason.serverMaintenance really meant this: server maintenance.
As no general outcry occurred, "I'm affected, too", it may really have been a local German server only.

I will watch my Firefoxes a day or 2 and then mark this thread as [solved], unless the problem should re-appear.

Cheers,
Karl

I do a LOT of Bookmarking for my motorcycle forums....

I keep all of those bookmarks in a "Folder" off the main FF Bookmarks tree.

I occasionally upload those bookmarks to a server for others to download them, and then merge them into their own bookmarks.... this works for all browsers, I have explicit instructions for
  • FF
    Chrome
IE Explorer ( I assume Edge is the same? )
    Opera
the merged bookmarks work in every browser that I have tried.

To create the subset "Motorcycle" bookmarks, I use FF and the Library "showall bookmarks"

I save a JSON backup locally:
I disconnect from the internet:
I then do a Control-A to highlight all bookmarks, and Hold down Control and click on "Motorcycle folder" to remove it from the highlighted bookmarks.

then I delete everything that is highlighted.

this leaves my FF with only the subset of bookmarks, I then export those in HTML format, and then upload that file to my server....

anyone can download them free of charge......

Once all that is done, I can restore my personal copy from a local JSON file,
or, just reconnect the internet and walk away...
FF Sync restores all of my "lost bookmarks".

I prefer the JSON method though, just in case Sync got "out of Sync" and thought I should delete everything in the cloud :?

anyone who is curious about this, can refer to my threads on the topic.
