System Hanging up During Suspend

Post by Dumfy » Mon Nov 11, 2019 10:54 am

HI all,

I was unsure in which Forum to post this question, so as I'm a newbie to Mint, this seemed as good as any.

Have been using Mint 19.2 for a few weeks now, dual booting with Windows 10. During Mint set up, I created /Root /Swap /Home and all seemed to be OK.
Have now realised the PC hangs quite frequently when I use Suspend. It doesn't happen every time but more often than not and happens whether I suspend it myself or let the system do it via Power Settings. When doing it manually, I hear the 'click' sound of the HDDs shutting down, but the PC itself doesn't & it then needs a push button reset.

I've been finding my way around Mint and have installed/removed several programs along the way and assumed may be I've caused it. So, I've used Timeshift to restore my system back to a week after I installed - it still hangs on suspend.

Is there an easy way to find out what's causing this as I know how hard it is in Windows to pin down.

If it's too complicated for a newbie & as I've not been using Mint that long, I don't have a problem of doing a fresh install of Mint 19.2 and see what happens. I can't remember if I used suspend much when I first installed Mint as I was regularly switching between OS's until I became more confident with Mint.

Should a fresh install be best, how do I install only to /Root . . . . . and leave my /Swap and /Home partitions as they are?

Many thanks

Dumfy

Hi there,
I have an idea, but the first order of business is always to attach your inxi output (see signature).
To get help, always post your system configuration: open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T), type the following command and copy its output:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz

Hi ParaDice

I've copied/pasted the info I hope you need from the terminal command . . . inxi -Fxz

Thank you

Hello again,

you're still using the default kernel for Mint 19.2, which is kernel 4.15. You might update your kernel to the most recent version (5.3) and see if that does the trick for you. You can do so by going to Mint Update Manager > View > Linux kernel > 5.3 > Install

Image

Please note that you need to restart for the changes to take effect.
To get help, always post your system configuration: open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T), type the following command and copy its output:

Am still having this issue and can't seem to resolve it.

I updated the kernel to 5.3, wiped Linux and re-installed it fresh. Now back on 4.15 kernel. Fully updated system and loaded/installed nothing - just what Mint came with out of the box so to speak. System still hangs on Suspend, either doing it myself, or via Power Manager settings. At one point, seemed to have success - noticed it wouldn't hang until I changed desktop background/icons and desktop theme. Proved to be a red herring.

Any ideas? Could it be a driver issue? Graphics card etc?

Many thanks

I'm not sure how to read this. Did you try kernel 5.3 and it did not resolve the problem?

My apologies. Bad explanation on my part. Installing 5.3 didn't resolve the issue, so I opted to fresh install and have been using 4.15 since. System still hangs.

Was going to see if hibernate would work instead of suspend, but can't find that option on Mint.

Hi there,

I have experienced that "shopping around" between kernels may resolve suspend problems without going into the finer details. On my desktop machine, kernel 5.3 has also started to cause suspend issues recently. You may try v5.0, which did the trick for me.

If that doesn't help, please send the machine to suspend to provoke the error once more. Then post your system logs from around that time (Mint Menu > Logs).

I wouldn't recommend that for your machine, anyway, since you're using an SSD. Hibernate (aka "suspend-to-disk") will write the content of your RAM to a file on your disk, thus causing unnecessary wear to your SSD. With an SSD, booting from scratch will be just as fast as hibernation.

Hi ParaDice,

Many thanks for your continued support.

I switched to Kernel 5.0.0.36-generic and the suspend problem is still there I'm sorry to say.

Would editing GRUB cause this? I've edited the GRUB file so that it doesn't time out at boot - changed from 10 seconds to -1
I've also noticed that as well as the suspend issue, sometimes when I use Restart, the PC hangs and I have to use the reset button.

From a totally different angle, I tested Ubuntu 19.10 which also hung up using suspend. I don't have the suspend problem in Windows 10 thankfully.

Am back on Mint 19.2 (Kernel 5.0.0.36-generic) now which for me is a much better experience than Ubuntu

I've tried including log files, but they won't attach or drag/drop. Keep getting 'invalid file extension' error. Also, which logs do you need as there is a list from Important to Hardware. Do you need all of them?

Regards

Dumfy

Nope, I don't think so. GRUB is responsible for booting the OS in the first place; suspend is a function of the OS, not GRUB.

That only helps us inasmuch as it shows we don't have a hardware damage on our hands - which is nice to know, of course. I'm not surprised Ubuntu shows a similar kind of behaviour since Mint is based on Ubuntu.

Don't attach them as a document. Just open up the text file and copy/paste the contents here. As to the question which type of logs are needed: just go with the "all" category, and only select the logs from around the time you suspended your system.

Hi ParaDice,

Here is the All Log File. It's quite long even though it's only a couple of minutes worth. I hope it helps.

Kind regards

Re: System Hanging up During Suspend

Post by ParaDice » Tue Dec 03, 2019 1:35 pm

Hi there,

nope, sorry, this isn't helpful. Are you sure this is the log file from around the time you made a failed suspend attempt? If not, provoke another failure and immediately secure the log files.

Your log files don't say anything about suspending the system. If so, there would be an entry saying "systemd-sleep: Suspending system".

Also, please always enclose log files inside [.code)[/code) brackets. This will make reading your postings and logs much easier.
To get help, always post your system configuration: open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T), type the following command and copy its output:

Sorry that wasn't helpful, tho the log files were created after I suspended the PC.

As the PC completely locks up when suspend is activated, the only option I have to get the PC back to life is to hit the reset button and reboot. I then took the log file after this when back in Mint. I assume/guess that the log file created after the reboot is different or clean and doesn't show suspend activation?
If so, I don't know how to create a log file while activating suspend prior to the PC locking up. How do I immediately secure the log files?

With kind regards

Dumfy

You can't immediately secure the log file as your machine crashes. However, you can force the log file manager to include log entries that go back further in time. To do so, just scroll down in the log file manager. You will notice that it will load additional entries as you scroll. Save everything to a text file, open it and make sure that it contains a suspend entry (typically Ctrl + F will start a text search in any text editor). Then post the contents here as described above.

Hi ParaDice,

I hope this latest log file helps. I noticed that some details in it are displayed on my monitor as the PC is suspended. Network error maybe? Also, the details are replicated and the list becomes longer each time I use Suspend.

Thank you

Re: System Hanging up During Suspend

Post by pgmer6809 » Sat Dec 14, 2019 2:45 am

I am having exactly the same problem. But only on one machine. The problem is not related just to MINT, I have it on BIonic and even on Fedora 30.
The problem is intermittent; sometimes Suspend works, sometimes it doesn't.

I can add the following detail which might help.
If the suspend works OK, then when I wake up the machine and issue a

Code: Select all

journalctl -b -r
command I can see what was written to the journal as the machine was going down
the last two lines of the suspend are:
Dec 13 21:41:46 Trojan kernel: PM: Syncing filesystems ... done.
Dec 13 21:41:46 Trojan kernel: PM: suspend entry (deep)
If the suspend does NOT work, then I have to power cycle (or Reset Button) the box.
Then I issue the command:

Code: Select all

journalctl -b -1 -r
and I see that the last item written to the journal is:
Dec 10 hh:mm:ss Trojan kernel: PM: suspend entry (deep)
The Syncing filesystems line is never written. So I don't know which of the two steps is hanging, but it should be one of them.
Maybe it is related to having a USB stick plugged in?
I thought at one time that was it, and it might contribute to the problem but it does not seem to be the only factor.
I sure would like to know what the solution is. It's EXTREMELY annoying
Probably a systemd bug. (ANOTHER ONE!)

Following on from the last post, I used the same commands in Terminal. The first is when Suspend worked . . . .

Code: Select all

Re: System Hanging up During Suspend

Post by Dumfy » Sat Dec 14, 2019 9:29 am

I hope this helps as it's beyond my limited capability - LOL

Something I've noticed is that Suspend always works after first boot, but most of the time fails at a subsequent attempt. Sometimes it will fail on third or fourth attempt.
A friend did mention it may down to my Gigabyte Motherboard (GA-MA790FXT-UD5P). Gigabyte are known to have issues with Linux? This board is probably around 10 years old by now.
