Dell U2718Q 4K problem

Hello

Have video card GeForce GTX 770M and monitor Dell U2718Q which is working properly on Windows with resolution 3840*2160 60Hz via display port. But under Linux Mint 19.2 I can't set 60Hz with resolution 3840*2160, so only 30Hz available for me. I have installed latest nvidia drivers. Also played with xrandr with no luck :( Please help.

Tried to edit xorg and monitor.xml and set 60 Hz but it didn't help.

Use these commands and post the output: inxi -SMCGx and xrandr --verbose

How is the monitor connected, including any adapter or switch. For example, HDMI port directly to HDMI port.

The xrandr --newmode and --addmode commands don’t work with the Nvidia driver.

Use this command to rename the existing xorg.conf file:
sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.old

Use this command to create a new file: sudo touch /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Open the file for editing: xed admin:///etc/X11/xorg.conf

Add these lines:

Log out and back in. Open the Nvidia Settings utility to check if the correct resolution and refresh rate are being used. If not, then try to change it.

When both are correct, open the Display program and click the Apply button to save the setting.

If there is a problem getting back to the desktop, then press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to enter virtual console tty1. Use this command to remove the xorg.conf file and reboot: sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf; reboot

I did as described above but now I can't set resolution more then 3200*1800 and monitor after reboot working on resolution 2560*1440 60Hz.
So reverting back old xorg...

Please help with 4K and 60Hz :)

Use this command to remove the monitors.xml file, if it exists. It may interfere with the xorg.conf file. A new one is created when a change is made in the Display program: rm ~/.config/monitors.xml

Then repeat the previous steps to rename and create the xorg.conf file, but use the file below. This one will have the additional line Option "ModeDebug" "true", to explain why the 3840x2160_60.00 mode was not used.

Yes, using the Nvidia Settings utility but that option will be grayed out until the resolution is changed from Auto to the actual resolution. The refresh rate option will be just to the right. I assumed you already tried that.

The xrandr tool can also change the refresh rate, using this command, but the refresh rate must be listed in the xrandr command output:
xrandr --output DP-1 --mode 3840x2160 --rate 60

If you can make it back to the desktop but the refresh rate is not correct, upload the Xorg.0.log file.

If you cannot make it back, remove that file and when you get to the desktop, upload the Xorg.0.log.old file:

If those all don’t work, then read on.
1. Is there a setting for SST or MST mode or DP 1.2 mode in the monitor's OSD (On-Screen menu)?

2. Is the monitor using a mini DisplayPort to mini DisplayPort connection? If yes, can you try a mini DisplayPort to Displayport connection.

3. Get the EDID from the Windows installation and compare it with the one from the Mint installation.

1.All above configs are working but only with max resolution 2560*1440 60Hz. Even in nvidia settings I can't select more then 2560*1440. There is no SST or MST mode for U2718Q.

I haven't mini DP to mini DP cable, only mini DP to DP(provided by monitor vendor) which is working properly.

First config above fails and I can't enter in X. Please see logs here - https://termbin.com/3obs
Second one is also fails, see logs here - https://termbin.com/e505. (UPDATE: deleted quote at the end and it is working but with max resolution 2560*1440 60Hz). Why all working configs above don't allow to set resolutions more then 2560*1440? Is it a bug?

Under windows 10 I haven't any problems with this monitor and I have possibility to select refresh rate 30Hz or 60 Hz. So it means that problem in Linux Mint but I want to find the way how I can set 60 Hz, maybe some bug in Linux Mint. Please help, I want to continue working under my favourite Linux distro but currently I have a problem with it due to low refresh rate.

I went over all the xorg.conf files and found one mistake. Any line with DFP-0 is not correct:

I’ve seen your problem in other topics I’ve been involved in, all involving the higher resolutions like 4K; everything works in Windows but not Linux. Sometimes workarounds using a custom xorg.conf file worked, or using a 50 or 55 Hz refresh rate, or changing the video port connection, but sometimes no solution.

In Windows, the monitor's vendor provides a disk with .INF files, which list the monitor's supported resolutions and other info. This is added to the Windows Registry where it can be read by the graphics driver. Linux can't use these files so the graphics driver must extract this info directly from the monitor's EDID. There may be additional info added to the Registry to help use the highest resolution and refresh rate.

I assume you checked in Nvidia Settings after testing each working xorg.conf file to see if 3840x2160 @60 Hz was available and be sure there is no new monitors.xml file created, which will happen any time the Apply button is clicked and can conflict with the xorg.conf file.

There are inconsistencies in Linux. I don’t know how the 3840x2160_30 mode was used in your first post because this is the info from the log for that mode, before the mode validation overrides options were added:

You can test other Nvidia drivers and kernels in the Update Manager, such as 5.0 and 5.3.

One method that I think was mentioned there was to boot the laptop in Legacy (CSM) mode instead of UEFI mode without using an xorg.conf file.
