Windows drives on LM computer ?

Post by vladtepes » Tue Dec 03, 2019 4:08 am

OK so my existing Windows computer has multiple TB (like 8 or so) of Windows 'stuff', photos, music, documents and so on.

I'm building a new Windows system and was planning to use my existing system for Linux Mint (not dual boot).

Now here's the catch - my new system is ultra-small and there is no room for HDD's etc so my data will need to stay on the HDD's where it is now.

So... if I install Linux instead of Windows on that computer can I still access the Windows data somehow?

•across my home network of mostly windows machines?
•via Windows in a VM?
•via Wine or similar?
•some other way?

What I really want to be able to do is access the data on that HDD from Windows via a share or a network drive. Essentially using that drive as an extension of my new Windows system (even though the drive is connected to a Linux computer) \

Does that make sense? I hope so.

Advice welcomed.

There are ways to do this, but I have a question. Your new "ultra-small" system has no room for drives? Do you mean, no drives at all or not more than one perhaps SSD or M.2? If none, where will the Mint OS be installed?
I feel more like I do than I did when I got here.

Linux mint can see all drives NTFS and EXT4, while windows can not see the EXT4 , so you can access those drives with Linux Mint.

Where are you wanting to install Linux? on those windows drives?, I would get a smaller drive 120gb or so for linux install separate from your windows storage. or someone can explain how to install on one of those drives without messing up what else is on those drives.

In short - YES you will still be able to "see" everything that windwoes has produced.

As has been stated. Windwoes will not "see" any EXT4 partitions.

smgordon is good with his suggestion of a smaller drive dedicated to the Operating System (be it windwoes, OS/2, Apple, or Linux) that way there is little risk of damage to your existing data.

For clarification this will be the situation

System 1
Linux (formerly Windows)
boot drive is nvme m.2 SSD
HDD has my data (NTFS)
SSD2 has my data (NTFS)

System 2.

Windows only, (new system)
small form factor M2 SSD only.

I want to be able to be logged onto my Windows computer (and assuming Linux computer is turned on of course) save files from my windows computer direct to the NTFS data drive connected to the Linux system.

Don't see that as a problem, I still have NTFS drives connected to my Linux machines. Haven't tried to access them from Windwoes for a while though.

The NTFS drives can be accessed by Linux. If Samba is configured, Windows and Linux systems can share files seamlessly.
