WiFi icon looks weird

Post by Mr Ethernet » Wed Dec 04, 2019 10:34 am

I attempted to completely hide the WiFi icon from the panel but instead managed to make it look like this:

Any ideas what's going on?

How can I:
  • hide the WiFi icon completely from the panel?
  • make the WiFi revert to its default appearance?

1.) Why?
2.) Change the default theme

Mine looks exactly like that. How are you expecting it to look?

Mine used to look like this, before I tried to remove it:

It was similar but it has definitely changed slightly.

Given that you want to hide the WiFi icon completely, does it really matter what it looks like?

Fair enough. I just thought that with your username that you might have had something against WiFi. :D

What DE are you using? If Cinnamon and you have the Network manager applet on your panel the Network manager systray icon will be hidden. If you remove the Network manager applet, then the systray icon will display.

They have slightly different icons....
For custom Nemo actions, useful scripts for the Cinnamon desktop, and Cinnamox themes visit my Github pages.

Yup, I'm using Cinnamon.

I just tried adding the Network Manager applet back into my panel and lo and behold... my WiFi icon looks the same as when I first installed Mint! This is awesome.

I'm still a noob but now I'm one very small step closer to not being a noob!

Thanks! :D

So now that I'm looking in the right place (the "Add applets to the panel" window), I'm able to answer my other question by myself!

It all comes down to different combinations of the Network Manager applet and the System Tray applet being enabled:

Clock only:

Network Manager (disabled)
System Tray (disabled)

Clock + "good" WiFi icon (with bars):

Network Manager (enabled)
System Tray (disabled)

Clock + "good" WiFi icon (with bars) + Update Manager:

Network Manager (enabled)
System Tray (enabled)

Clock + basic WiFi icon (no bars) + Update Manager:

Network Manager (disabled)
System Tray (enabled)
