19.3 Microphone not working.

Post by DrPostman »

I've used Mint since version 18. Recently did a clean install of 19.3 and my
internal microphone and any external I plug in or attach via Bluetooth will
not work. Everything else works fine. I installed 'pavucontrol' but that didn't
help. A bootable thumb drive with 19.2 DOES work, which I find strange.
I'd hate to have to revert to only 19.2, but I thought I'd post this and see if
anyone else has a suggestion.

I'm not a newbie but I'm still not well versed on this OS.

Hi DrPostman, and welcome to the forum.

Let's see the outputs from running these terminal commands and maybe we can figure out why this is happening: inxi -Fxz, arecord -l, pacmd list-cards and dmesg | grep snd.

When pasting large blocks of text, please enclose the results in-between [ⅽode] and [/ⅽode] code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply.

You did great, thanks.

Next I'd like to see the output of amixer while a microphone is plugged in and again without one plugged in. I'm not touching on BT yet, but I'm wondering if the issue might be muted input, or reverse jack detection.

I had an old headset with a mic and when I plugged it in I accidentally yanked it to where
the wire detached. I'm afraid it's dead. Would it matter if I used the plug only? BTs (I have 4)
and the internal mic are all I have left now. I only paid $5 for the headset 8 years ago so no
great loss.

Re: 19.3 Microphone not working.

It did help. It's showing the Boost increasing for the microphone that is active. So it doesn't appear to be a jack detection issue.

Let's see what happens with a test. In the terminal enter arecord -d 10 test-mic.wav and speak near the internal mic for 10 seconds, then run aplay test-mic.wav and tell me what you hear.

EDIT: If that just gave you noise, when you have a chance, fire up the 19.2 Live version and run pacmd list-cards, dmesg | grep snd and amixer so we can compare with the new install.

Re: 19.3 Microphone not working.

Post by MrEen »

The only significant difference I can see is the Boost for the Internal Mic was not turned up on 19.2. You could see if lowering that in alsamixer makes your mic work, but I really doubt that would help, although I've seen things just as weird actually work.

It's probably best to run this command on both OS versions:

Code: Select all

curl https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/raw/master/src/utils/pa-info?inline=false | bash | nc termbin.com 9999
That will produce a URL at the end of the output with a comprehensive listing of your audio setup. Once posted, it will take me some time to go through all the info.

I turned it up to see if that would make it work on 19.3 so yea, it won't help.

Here's the first URL generated.
https://termbin.com/mvx2

I appreciate all your help with this. If I have to revert back to 19.2 I can live with that.

Re: 19.3 Microphone not working.

Post by MrEen »

I've just started looking through the outputs. The first thing I'd like you to do is in pavucontrol turn the Bluetooth device off on the Configuration tab just so it can't interfere. Then delete the files in /home/user/.config/pulse followed by running pulseaudio -k in the terminal. Now try the arecord/aplay test.

I'll continue looking for other oddities.

I suspect I have found the cause, although I'm not certain how to fix it as yet.
Non working:

Code: Select all

Node 0x07 [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x41040a: Mono Amp-In
  Control: name="Internal Mic Boost Volume", index=0, device=0
    ControlAmp: chs=3, dir=In, idx=0, ofs=0
  Amp-In caps: ofs=0x00, nsteps=0x03, stepsize=0x27, mute=0
  Amp-In vals: [0x03]
  Pincap 0x00001720: IN
Vref caps: HIZ 50 GRD 80
Pin Default 0x90a7003e: [Fixed] Mic at Int N/A
Conn = Analog, Color = Unknown
    DefAssociation = 0x3, Sequence = 0xe
  Pin-ctls: 0x24: IN VREF_80
  Power states: D0 D3 EPSS
  Power: setting=D3, actual=D3
  Delay: 1 samples
Working:

Code: Select all

Node 0x07 [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x41040a: Mono Amp-In
  Control: name="Internal Mic Boost Volume", index=0, device=0
    ControlAmp: chs=3, dir=In, idx=0, ofs=0
  Amp-In caps: ofs=0x00, nsteps=0x03, stepsize=0x27, mute=0
  Amp-In vals: [0x00]
  Pincap 0x00001720: IN
Vref caps: HIZ 50 GRD 80
Pin Default 0x90a7003e: [Fixed] Mic at Int N/A
Conn = Analog, Color = Unknown
    DefAssociation = 0x3, Sequence = 0xe
  Pin-ctls: 0x24: IN VREF_80
  Power states: D0 D3 EPSS
  Power: setting=D0, actual=D0
  Delay: 1 samples
In the non working case, the pin is asleep (Power=D3.) My first suggestion would be to try putting the machine to sleep then waking it and see if that makes a difference.

I'll continue through the rest of the outputs, then see if I can find anything on the sleep issue.

Actually, I'm going to stop looking through the outputs now, as I think I know the source of the issue. Follow this instruction then test:

Your only options are to either deal with it or to disable power management for Intel's HDA driver:

Code: Select all

sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/snd-hda-intel.conf <<<'options snd-hda-intel power_save=0'
(takes effect on reboot)
If that doesn't work I'll go back to looking for other ideas, but I strongly suspect that's going to fix this.

Your suspicion was correct! Thank you so much. It's working now. :D

At least the command line wav test is. I hope it works when I start up
Zoom tonight for a meeting at 10p.

Thanks again!

I'm saving that command line code for the next time I have to
reinstall or run up against this for whatever reason. Don't see
anyone else posting this so I wonder why my hardware would
do this. Really do appreciate the help. It was working fine for
my meeting last night.

There's quite a few posts about other issues that are solved the same way. You're the first with this specific issue that was affected by the change to the power saving feature, but I have a user in another thread that may end up the same as you.

I'm glad this fixed you, and yes, do keep it in your notes for future installs. Anything Ubuntu based will probably need this fix.

Enjoy. :D

Hello MrEen,
I have simmular problem with 19.3 I follow your steps until this point. My problem is with internal microphone I'm not plugging in nothing except speakers. When I use skype or I run sound test I can hear echo and my voice like robot. Do you know any solution for this problem?
I have HP laptop
Thank you Greg

Hi GregM, and welcome to the forum.

See if this post helps with your issue.

If not, please start a new thread, as this one was for a somewhat different issue.

Hi All,
the topic might be older but as i bought a Latitude 7350 recently which created the problem i needed to solve it.

I found a strange solution but it worked, the idea came from the Arch Linux forum:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pu ... microphone

Check for the Acer Aspire One and Lenovo Ideapad 310-15ISK/330-15ARR issue and it will tell you to install PAVUCONTROL, go for the input, advanced and split the STEREO into 2 channels and put the left channel on 0.

With doing so, my microphone immediately started working, i could move back the left channel to where it was, everything was working fine. Need to look into a permanent solution now.
