Thanks, ricardogroetaers!

That is the "Applications Menu" that I saw when I tried xfce. The lack of "Search" is a bit of an issue, but I suppose it could work in tandem with whiskers menu. I'll keep this in mind as an option.

The Application Menu can coexist along with Whisker Menu on Linux Mint Xfce.

Menu whisker search is for installed programs only, does not include files or folders. However, Windows 7 or higher search does not work as expected. I miss the search on Windows XP.

I'm not sure anymore if Cinnamon's and MATE's versions of Mint Menu differ that much(I use gm10's) but if Places and System categories are turned off in MATE, you end up having that type of menu. Maybe the same can be easily done in Cinnamon too.

Edit: it doesn't expand automatically but hight can be modified.

For the hack of it, I've added the classic MATE Menu applet and it fits the description since it also auto-expand depending on the number of items but lacks the search feature.

Cinnamon doesn't use mint-menu at all. It's got it's own menu applet.
For custom Nemo actions, useful scripts for the Cinnamon desktop, and Cinnamox themes visit my Github pages.

^Yes, well, I forgot... cheers smurphos. :D

It might be worth looking in Spices. E.g. there's CinnVIIStarkMenu
menu applet which mimics the look of W7 menu.

Thanks, but it's not expanding, which is what I'm after.

I don't really want it to look like Windows 7. Quite the opposite; I'm happy with Cinnamon look.

^Too bad that semblance ends with the looks... How about Custom Applications Menu? It doesn't have the looks and I don't see a search field in the shot but maybe you can still configure it to a good use.

I forgot to mention, ZFR, if you can find a menu for Cinnamon that expands like MATE's or Xfce's but is lacking a searching capability, maybe it's not a big deal since you can always press Alt+F2 to do so. A key press one way or the other that boils down to the same thing...
