<SOLVED> VirtualBox 6.1 Installation Not Working on 19.3 Cin

Post by jackkileen »

I tried installing with kernels 5.4.10 and 11 both, and got the same errors.
Looking around various places, I see posts mentioning Secure Boot as possibly the problem but I checked the bios to see if Secure Boot was enabled and it says disabled. I'm running a dual boot with W10.

Maybe going back to an earlier kernel would work?

Here's the error message when installing...
Setting up virtualbox-6.1 (6.1.0-135406~Ubuntu~bionic) ...
addgroup: The group `vboxusers' already exists as a system group. Exiting.

vboxdrv.sh: failed: Look at /var/log/vbox-setup.log to find out what went wrong.

There were problems setting up VirtualBox. To re-start the set-up process, run
/sbin/vboxconfig
as root.
If your system is using EFI Secure Boot you may need to sign the
kernel modules (vboxdrv, vboxnetflt, vboxnetadp, vboxpci) before you can load
them. Please see your Linux system's documentation for more information.

Here's the error when trying to run it...

Here's the screenshot of the bios...
Boot Menu.jpg

Here's the error lines at the end of the log...
“scripts/Makefile.build:265: recipe for target '/tmp/vbox.0/linux/SUPDrv-linux.o' failed
make[2]: *** [/tmp/vbox.0/linux/SUPDrv-linux.o] Error 1
Makefile:1652: recipe for target '/tmp/vbox.0' failed
make[1]: *** [/tmp/vbox.0] Error 2
/tmp/vbox.0/Makefile-footer.gmk:114: recipe for target 'vboxdrv' failed
make: *** [vboxdrv] Error 2”

Reverting to a previous kernel should work .

Revert to the last one that worked.

I just posted a similar problem. Same type of error but different message. I have not tried reverting to older kernel as it was working fine with the one I have been using. I wish I could help but I'm in the same boat. I'll keep working on it and update you.

Thx for the replies!

So far, I tried installing two different versions of VBox, 5.2 & 6.1, from both the Software Manger and the VBox website and no joy from either.

Same error messages: vboxdrv.sh: failed: Look at /var/log/vbox-setup.log to find out what went wrong. If your system is using EFI Secure Boot you may need to sign the kernel modules (vboxdrv, vboxnetflt, vboxnetadp, vboxpci) before you can load them.

So apparently, the 4 modules above never load during the installations?

I rolled back to 4.15.0-74.84 from the latest 3 kernels and both versions of VBox now work.

Are there possible issues/risks running the older kernel and not the latest kernels?

Thanks!

Did you try disabling Secure Boot in the BIOS? I'm running Vbox 5.2.34 and kernel 5.0.0-37 without any issues.

Yes, (screenshot in first post).

I just now seen there is is a separate forum for "Virtualization", my bad.

In my understanding, one supported kernel is as secure as any other. Newer kernels mostly just accommodate more recent hardware. All other things being equal, if the latest LTS kernel (in this case, 4.15) works with your hardware and peripherals, that's the best one to use (less risk of regressions). Stated a little differently, that's precisely what LTS means, i.e., doesn't get feature upgrades but DOES get security updates.

Just tried 5.0.0-32.34 and Vbox 6.1 is running fine with it.

Thanks for that information! Still learning the ins and outs of Linux/Mint and almost free of Windows now. Still need it for just a few applications that I haven't quite found replacements yet.

I wonder now if this issue is just related to the newer kernels for some reason or something to do with my PC hardware/setup?

I guess I could install more recent kernels to see what the newest one is I can use with Vbox.

FYI, I just now received kernel 5.3.0-26 via Update Manager. Vbox works fine with the new kernel.

I added that kernel through the Update Manager and got the same error message for version 6.1 (I didn't try 5.2 with it). Vbox 5.2 & 6.1 does work with 4.15.0-74.84 and both work with 5.0.0-32.
So I guess this must be an issue my PC/hardware. It is working now so I will mark this solved.
I appreciate all the input/replies! Thx!
