Question about Manjaro and HP Envy x360 13-ar0022nn AMD Ryzen 5 3500U laptop

Post by Marko94 »

Hi all,

I am new here. I just bought new laptop , HP Envy x360 13-ar0022nn AMD Ryzen 5 3500U ,with 8 /gb RAM.

Atm using Windows 10, but I think that Windows using so many resourse as RAM, CPU , heats a lot, fans speed, battery life

Also no options to change kernel settings etc.

What I want to know, is my new laptop compatible with Linux Mint , how to check that?

Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 3500U 2.10 GHz/3.70 GHz (6MB cache)
• Display: 13.3 "Full HD IPS LED 1920 x 1080 Touch BrightView
• Graphical system: AMD Radeon Vega 8
• Working memory: 8GB DDR4 2400MHz (onboard)
• Hard disk: 512GB SSD PCIe NVMe M. 2

That is specification about my laptop.

Thanks in advance

I think you'll get the best picture yourself, regarding compatibility, if you try it for a while, from a bootable stick with persistence.

Although, trying it virtually is not bad idea either.

I just tried live boot.

As it seems all working fine, even touchscreen ,hehe

Only problem , I have Bang & Olufsen, quad speakers,
but sound comming only from bottom, so 2 speakers..

Is it possible to fix that ?

Thank you

It may be possible, but be aware that those B&O 4 speaker devices have been problematic in Linux since they were introduced.

Take a look at this post from a thread that has been running since November of 2016 for a possible workaround. You'll need to install alsa-tools-gui to be able to run HDAJackRetask, although in Manjaro, it's probably in alsa-tools instead.

Also, this later post has a different retasking setup that worked well for that user.

Mistake in writing. I was looking Manjaro and Linux mint site at that moment so by mistake I wrote Manjaro..
Edited now.

After trying all distros in live mode ( Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Arch, Manjaro, OpenSuse, Linux Mint), LM is only who gave me fully working system.
Even touchscreen working :P

And that's why your post was moved to Chat about Linux. Is it worth moving or do you consider it solved?

Yeah, probably.

I don't know if it is solved yet.
Atm I am working, will try those fixes for speakers. If it is working fine, I will put this thread to solved.

Btw, If I want dual boot with windows ( still not 100 % confident to put only Linux), I need to resize my C partition ( 500 GB) to for example 200 GB in unalocated state, and than during the instalation , need to choose install alongside windows ? That is it ? no need for extra partition, swap etc ? thanks

this is a tough question and can't be answered properly. a few users have done the same thing and ended up erasing windows and not being able to install bootloader even if mint installed properly you'll get a black screen unusable laptop. i would use 2 partitions one for /root one for /home but you'll need to do it manually. i'm also receiving the ryzen5 but lenovo laptop later after work and hopefully it will let me install bootloader in UEFI and for once in quite sometime i'll be a new user with no experience

Damn, now I am scared.. maybe best solution is to stay with Windows :P

omg i got my laptop lenovo flex 14 ryzen5 i can see quite a few design flaws right from the start, but i too am lost and from what i experienced so far my ryzen5 is slower laptop than my ryzen 3. on my desktop linux mint cinnamon i can put 2000 fish in the fishbowl with no issues. on my new lenovo ryzen 5 3500U i can only go as far as 750 at 60 fps  what in the hell is this? https://testdrive-archive.azurewebsites ... /FishBowl/ <<< test your html 5 graphics
anyway first you need to disable secure boot, enable legacy mode and disable fastboot. i'll stop there because i'd rather test the hardware first and have time to decide if i need to keep windows since there are quite a few certificates in uefi that are signed like preinstalled OS license in bios settings information and AMD platform security processor . i'm truly lost also

so i'm beginning to partition my 256GB_nvme to install mint in separate /root /home partitions. it's a shame that only 256GB is available and even more shame that i have to compromise hardware for price. in my win10 i get about 720 fish in automode with ryzen5 laptop and in ryzen3 desktop i get around 2300. i'm noticing battery life is also a suck no matter if windows or linux

here's what i have so far, do not know if boot loader will install yet
