Firefox: creating New Folder for Bookmarks.... How to Type in the name you want [solved]

Post by AZgl1500 »

this has been occurring over the last few updates to Firefox,
today, it finally pissed me off enough to try to go to Mozilla Community and find out what is wrong.
lost cause, I can't even get to a place to make a complaint.

Scenario:

control-D to create Bookmark

mouse down to find the right folder in your Sub-folders, can't find a folder with the right name.
So select 'New folder"
the New Folder tab shows up for almost 2 seconds...
if you are fast enough, you can type in 1 character at best.

this causes me to have to go to Library, find the 'new folder' with the new 1 character name.
Type in an appropriate name, CUT the bookmark,
mouse around until I find where I want to place it, and then PASTE.

I keep 1000s of bookmarks on lots of info.
this is a huge irritation, and I wish it would work like it used to.........
New folder, used to stay open until you typed in a name and pressed ENTER.

anyone have a clue as to why it don't work anymore?

this has nothing to do with Linux, it is the same in Win7

I have no certain solution for you, but I have had that same thing happen a few times when trying to make and name a new folder on my desktop or elsewhere in the file manager. (I don't think I ever noticed it happening on Firefox specifically though, but if I tried to make a new folder in FF while this vexing problem was going on, then I expect it would have been the same there too.)

I think it was the same thing you're describing though - I could only type one character (barely) before the naming option closed, and then I would have to right click it to try to add more. I don't recall if I was able to paste a name at that point. I think I still had to struggle to add another character before it shut me out again.

Unfortunately I cannot for the life of me remember if it was something on my keyboard that I had to press to reset it, or if I had to restart to resolve the problem, but it did eventually start working correctly each time. If it happens again I will make a note of it and let you know.

It was super annoying, so I hope you find a solution!

FWIW,

it never happens to me in File Manager, be it Win7 or 17/18/19 Nemo

Only in Firefox and it seems to be ingrained deep into their internal scheme of doing things with Bookmarks.

it just irks me, that I have to open Library and go find that lost 'new folder' and it is usually named 'new folder', unless I succeeded in getting one character entered.

Just to try it out, I restarted Firefox in SafeMode meaning all Addons disabled.
that had no effect, the new folder timed out in about 3 seconds.
I waited to see if it wait for me.
it didn't

Finally a Solution!

let Firefox create the 'new folder', now Double Click that new folder name...

It opens up and allows you to type in the name of your choice.

Now all we need do, is move that folder to where we want it....
a much easier task, as it now has a proper name.

Is the Bookmarks Toolbar activated? If yes, a right click in the toolbar is enough: choose New Folder..., the window pops out and does not close until you click on close.

No, I don't like that Tool bar, it takes up screen space, I run full screen most of the time.
