Poor quality VirtualBox graphical interface - Cinnamon

Post by Juraski »

Hello everyone, I have a problem with the graphic part of my VirtualBox, it is pixelated and locked at 640x640. This occurs not only in the virtualized machine (Guest Machine), but also in the Host app. The software interface itself looks like this. Although its not a problem it works, but a graph ends up becoming a nuisance to look at. A detail is the same with TexMaker on my Cinnamon. I am putting an image to demonstrate what is really happening.

Your post doesn't include any useful information. If the host is Linux Mint then you need to say so, and you need to post the output of inxi -Fxz. Use copy/paste, and enclose the output in code tags. You will see the </> code tags icon when you reply. If the host is not Linux Mint then you still need to say so. In addition, you don't say how you installed VirtualBox, where it came from or what version it is.

You might also like to click the link at the top of the page. You can't miss it, it's in red and says...

It's pronounced kad-eye-cha, not kada-itcha.

Adding the missing data
Hello guys, I have a problem with the graphics part of my VirtualBox (version 6.1), it is pixelated and blocked at 640x640. This occurs not only in the virtualized machine (Guest Machine), but also in the Host application - being the OS Linux Mint -. The software interface itself looks like this. Although it is not a functional problem, but a graphic one, it ends up becoming a nuisance to look at. One detail is that the same happens with TexMaker on my Cinnamon. I am putting up an image to demonstrate what is really going on.

For the installation I used the installation guide provided by Virtualbox, making the necessary modifications for my distribution - Linux Mint -. Follow the link to the installation guide used.

The one screenshot you shared from Virtualbox Preferences has:
Max Guest Screen Size : Hint
Then 640x480...

Looks like it is working exactly as intended. Virtualbox is telling the VMs that they should try using 640x480.
Click that top box (in virtualbox) that says 'Hint' and change it to Automatic.

Next thought I had was that maybe some herky jerky mouse movements happened under the systems's appearance menus.
Click Mint, type appearance, open appearance preferences. On the Fonts tab; maybe make sure something isn't super out of whack: Nice round numbers between 8 and 12 or something. Then click on the 'Details' button and make sure the DPI isn't super off or set to 'auto detection'. My guess is that your monitor is in the range of 96dpi, and should use subpixel smoothing for LCDs with 'slight' hinting and subpixel order of RGB. Definitely not banking on any of this...but at least worth peeking.

Can you open the QT5 Settings app from the menu and confirm what 'style' is set to?

Theme: Dark Adwaita [GTK2 / 3]
Is this form a copy/paste from Neofetch? If so have you installed a 'Dark Adwaita' from somewhere? The stock dark version of Adwaita displays as Theme: Adwaita-dark [GTK2/3]

You screenshots look to me like you you've got a broken GTK2 theme (QT uses the GTK2 theme to integrate)

The Adwaita-dark theme [GTK2 / 3] is one of the themes that comes with Mint Cinnamon, in the Themes / Controls section.
So I didn't install any theme in my distribution. Thanks!!

Thanks for clarifying - have you checked what style you have set in QT5 settings? Should normally be gtk2. If you've set it to bb10dark that one is broken.

If you are tying to make virtualbox 6 look good with a dark system-theme see
