Laptop screen missing but HDMI works

Post by mblbn »

Hello,

After recent bios update my laptop screen stopped showing anything but lenovo bios logo(it shows dual boot menu and mint logo for a short moment during boot and that's all). nvidia X Server doesn't even detect it. On Win everything works fine.
BIOS backflash is no option, unfortunately.
I've got external monitor connected to HDMI port, and for now this is the only way i can use LM on my laptop.

I'm new to linux, so i hope to find some help here. Previous research led me only to common issues with external monitors and lenovo support turned out to be useless

Screen changing hotkey works, but hdmi monitor just blinks and nothing happens
here is the output of

Re: Laptop screen missing but HDMI works

Post by roblm »

This line in the inxi output:
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.6 driver: nvidia

Should show this if the Nvidia driver is selected:
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.6 driver: modesetting,nvidia

Check if the BIOS update changed a BIOS setting from Hybrid Graphics to Discrete Graphics (Nvidia Graphics).

It was set to Switchable Graphics and i changed it to Discrete Graphics
inxi still outputs

Code: Select all

Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.6 driver: nvidia
but both monitors are now present. Thank You! :D
i can't believe it was this simple, given that i tried switching this setting before and it didn't work or switched to sole laptop screen

That doesn’t make sense because the modesetting driver is needed to drive the Intel GPU, which controls the laptop’s screen.

Would you use this command to upload the Xorg.0.log file to terminal.com pastebin:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999

Post the URL link that displays in the Terminal window.

Use this command to open the existing xorg.conf file and post the contents: xed /etc/X11/xorg.conf

The xorg.conf file is not configured correctly for hybrid graphics (Integrated Intel + Nvidia card), but for only Nvidia graphics. Use this command to remove it: sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Log out and back in. If the laptop’s screen is not working, then change the setting in the BIOS back to Switchable Graphics.

After deleting and restarting both monitors remained active, so i restarted again and switched to Switchable Graphics, which resulted in laptop monitor being off(no bios logo this time, simply off). I switched back to Discrete and created new conf with

Code: Select all

sudo nvidia-xconfig
Both monitors run fine in FHD and 144hz.

I did not mention, but i'm ok with having just nvidia graphics enabled. Is hybrid graphics proper/optimal feature, or in any other way necessary?

That creates the identical file that was removed. You should not need the xorg.conf file unless there is a configuration problem. The command sudo nvidia-xconfig should only be used for systems with Nvidia graphics. The correct command for an Optimus based system like you have is sudo nvidia-xconfig --prime

The Intel GPU should be used most of the time because it uses less power, so it saves battery life and there is less likely a chance for overheating. Switch to the Nvidia GPU when you need more graphics processing power. This can be for certain programs, video or 3D games that run too slow or the image quality needs to be improved.
