How to change panel length in cinnamon?

Post by subluminal »

I just installed Mint Cinnamon, first time user and am trying to customize the look and feel.

How do I change the panel length?

Right now it is 100% and at the top of the screen, I want to make the length about 50% since the middle portion is being wasted, no icons or such there.

Any help would be appreciated.

I looked at

Code: Select all

/usr/share/themes/Mint-Y-Dark/cinnamon/cinnamon.css
and searched for panel. It has fields for setting the height of horizontal panels, and the width of vertical panels; but nothing to adjust the width of horizontal panels or the height of vertical panels. So it may be impossible. Maybe someone more knowledgeable about these CSS files might shine some light on this.

Rather than shortening the panel, why not hide it completely when not in use so that you gain the whole of the screen.

You might be interested in using a Dock-like thingy.

So you can auto-hide your panel, and use the dock for most applications.

Agreed, esp. since Cinnamon takes up OVER 1 G RAM. Ridiculous, in Linux Id' expect a DE that bloated to do the dishes for me.

That seems unusual. Right now it uses 75MB on my computer (in 19.3); if I total all the other Cinnamon-related processes they add up to about 260MB.
