Re: HP laser MFP 135w
The HP laser MFP 135w is not supported by HPLIP but that does not make scanning or printing impossible. Fortunately, there are other ways. Indeed, you appear to have discovered the method for printing.

Re: HP laser MFP 135w
Hi Brian,
Unfortunately, I don't have wifi in the basement where I have the printer. I'll have to wait to enable the wifi to prove it.
Just one question: so there's no way to connect the printer via USB?..only via wifi?
I really appreciate your help. I ordered a wifi repeater today and I'm waiting for it to arrive.

Re: HP laser MFP 135w
Hello jofraprez,
I said that this device is not supported by HPLIP but now want to make a stronger statement:
- This device is based on SPL (Samsung Printer Language) and will never be supported by HPLIP.
- set up printing as described at https://wiki.debian.org/CUPSDriverlessPrinting
- set up scanning as detailed at https://github.com/alexpevzner/sane-airscan
There is a package (ULD) at https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/se ... l/24494382.Just one question: so there's no way to connect the printer via USB?..only via wifi?
I do not quite understand how you were able to get printing going on USB and would appreciate finding out. Please post the lpstat -t I asked for. There should also be a PPD file for your printer in /etc/cups/ppd. Only you know its name. I'd like the output ofI really appreciate your help. Re: HP laser MFP 135w
Hi brian_p,
I'm very sorry for the delay in answering you. With the government restrictions due to the pandemic, I'm having trouble receiving the wifi relay I bought online. I haven't gotten it yet.
I've done the test you asked for with this:
The result is as follows:
Therefore, even though Linux Mint recognizes the printer via USB, I cannot print.
On the other hand, the package (ULD) no longer exists: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/se ... l/24494382
Anyway, I'll wait a few more days to get the wifi repeater. If I don't get it this Friday, I'll borrow one from a friend and try to follow your directions.
Thanks for your help and patience.

Re: HP laser MFP 135w
Understandable, so not a problem.
It would be best for you to give the output ofI've done the test you asked for with this:The result is as follows:Code: Select all
sudo grep "*NickName" /etc/cups/ppd/YOUR_PPD_FILE

Are you sure about that? There is a box with a + sign. You have to click on it and another box to get to the driver package. On the other hand, the package (ULD) no longer exists: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/se ... l/24494382
Anyway, a user has now given full instructions on how to get the package and on how to install it and set up a print queue. See Message #16 at https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/689584.

Re: HP laser MFP 135w
Hi brian_p,
While the wifi repeater arrives, I have tried the solution you indicate at https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/689584
I've followed the step-by-step summary instructions:
The printer is installed and recognized, supposedly, by USB. However, when I try to print something (anything), it doesn't print anything and it goes through the sheets as if it were a document with many sheets, until the printer is empty.
Any ideas of yours that might guide me?
PS: I forgot to mention that the scanner is not detected either.
While the wifi repeater arrives, I have tried the solution you indicate at https://answers.launchpad.net/hplip/+question/689584
I've followed the step-by-step summary instructions:
Code: Select all
1. Get the driver package from
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-color-laser-mfp-170-printer-series/24494365
which on the command line can be done with
cd /tmp && wget https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/MFP170/ULDLINUX_V1.00.39_00.12.zip
2. Unzip and untar the package with
unzip ULDLINUX_V1.00.39_00.12.zip && cd ULDLINUX_V1.00.39_00.12 && tar xvfz uld.tar.gz
3. Run the installation script with
cd uld && sudo ./install.sh
4a. Add the printer via the CUPS interface at http://localhost:631/
by manually selecting the PPD file
/usr/share/ppd/uld-hp/HP_Color_Laser_MFP_17x_Series.ppd
OR
4b. Add the printer via lpadmin and the command line via
sudo lpadmin -p m179fnw -v "URI" -E -P /usr/share/ppd/uld-hp/HP_Color_Laser_MFP_17x_Series.ppd
where URI is the string corresponding to the printer returned by the
command
lpinfo -v | grep usb
Any ideas of yours that might guide me?
PS: I forgot to mention that the scanner is not detected either.
Re: HP laser MFP 135w
Hello jofraprez,
Have you used the correct PPD? You want HP_Laser_MFP_13x_Series.ppd. For scanning, would you please have a look at https://wiki.debian.org/Scanner#issue and find where the installation process has put libsane-smfp.so?

Re: HP laser MFP 135w
Hi brian_p,
I've uninstalled everything and reinstalled it from scratch. I made sure to select the correct PPD: HP_Laser_MFP_13x_Series.ppd
I can print properly (I'm overjoyed).
The scanner still doesn't work. I followed your instructions on libsane-smfp.so, and I found the following.
I also find other similar files:
I've come this far and I have no idea how to continue.
Thank you so much for your help, again.

/usr/lib64/sane is entirely the wrong place for these files. Copy them to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane with
Code: Select all

Hi!
As a stated by brian_p, I need to install sane-airscan. More details can be found <https://github.com/alexpevzner/sane-air ... /README.md>
Briefly, I need to follow the steps in <https://software.opensuse.org//download ... ne-airscan> (choose OS).
In my case (Ubuntu 18.04), these steps:
1) Add repository
sudo sh -c "echo 'deb http://download.opensuse.org/repositori ... ntu_18.04/ /' > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/home:pzz.list"
2) Download key key
wget -nv https://download.opensuse.org/repositor ... elease.key -O Release.key
3) Add key
sudo apt-key add - < Release.key
4) update repositories
sudo apt-get update
5) install sane-airscan
sudo apt-get install sane-airscan

But things have changed a bit: there's a newer driver at HP:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/se ... l/24494382
Namely V1.00.39:00.12_00.1 from Jun 26, 2020.
Furthermore, adding the PPD can also be done by means of the application Printers, which is easier.
Finally, with the new driver the workaround for
libsane-smfp.so
appears to be superfluous: the scanner works right after the successful installation of the driver. It was surprising to me that this HP printer is actually a Samsung, so that HPLIP is of no avail. But given the fact that HP has bought the entire Samsung printer business back in 2017, it's not so very surprising after all.
