[SOLVED] HDMI Monitor is recognized but has no signal, if set to WQHD resolution

Hi,

everybody, I am aware that some people have a related problem, however, none of the posts helped so far. So I hope it is alright to ask this question:

I just installed Linux Mint 19.3 on my Dell XPS 7590. One problem that I simply cannot solve is using a second Monitor in WQHD (2560x1440) resolution via HDMI. It is recognized throughout all other resolutions but the monitor itself goes blank and prompts 'no signal' the moment I switch it to said resolution. The exact same setup definitely works under Windows 10. And, I don't know why, but it worked ONCE for one session with:

So it must be technically possible. However, I was dumb enough to switch my PRIME profile from Intel to nvidia, as I did not know it would reset my display settings after reboot. It did and I could not restore the working state ever since.

Use these commands in the Terminal and post the output: inxi -SMCGx and xrandr --verbose

Is the monitor using an HDMI port to HDMI port connection, without using any adapter or switch?

Thanks for the reply roblm! I have already read quite a few of your posts while researching the problem. Your appearance gives me hope, that this problem might be solved eventually : )

The monitor is connected directly via a HDMI cable. No adapters or switches involved.

Switch to the Intel GPU and reboot. Use this command to remove the monitors.xml file, if it exists:
rm ~/.config/monitors.xml

Use the command xrandr and check if the monitor is connected to DP-3 and not DP-1-3.

If it is DP-3, then try using this command that previously worked for you: xrandr --output DP-3 --auto

If that doesn’t work, then try this: xrandr --output DP-3 --mode 2560x1440 --rate 60 --pos 0x0

I switched to Intel GPU. xrandr now tells me

about the second monitor.
I removed monitors.xml and monitors.xml.save

Just to be safe, I rebooted at this point and checked, that monitors.xml was still not present after restart.

Yet, none of the two command worked. Each command causes a short flickering, but the second monitor stays black and tells me 'so signal found'. Only going back to a lower resolution makes it show anything.

With the Intel GPU selected, use the xrandr command and check if the laptop is connected to eDP-1. Then try using this command.

xrandr --output eDP-1 --mode 1920x1080 --pos 0x0 --primary --output DP-3 --mode 2560x1440 --rate 60 --right-of eDP-1

If that fails, then try using these commands. This method can be tested on your system because the HDMI port on your laptop is internally connected to the Intel GPU, but on most laptops, it is connected to the Nvidia GPU and these commands don’t work:

Yes, perfect! Setting the framerate to 55 Hz solved the problem!
I have been playing with different framerates, but I have only been switching between 30 Hz and 60 Hz.

Thank you so much! I was just an inch away from deleting Linux and switch back to Windows for my current computer.

The only problem left:
How can I make this permanent? I wrote a bashrc function performs the three commands you suggested. But I have to open a terminal blindly and type the command blindly, as the big screen is my primary screen.
Do you know of any better solution to this?

And if anyone is finding this and actually needs the 50 Hz commands: There is a typo. You have to use the name "2560x1440_49.95" throughout the three commands:

Use the 3 xrandr commands in the Terminal. Then open the Display program and arrange the two displays the way you want and set the primary display. Then click Apply. This saves the settings to a new monitors.xml file.

Then open the File Manager. Hidden files should be made visible. Open the .profile file and add the first 2 xrandr commands at the bottom.

Log out and back in to check the settings. Also, switch to the Nvidia GPU and back.

Thanks for the tip with .profile. That worked! That is such a huge improvement over the state a few days ago.

However, switching to Nvidia GPU will cause an error on login, because the commands involve DP-3 and with Nvidia GPU they should involve DP-1-3. I could login, but got an error dialog about not finding DP-3 and the second monitor was black again. Switching back to Intel GPU loaded the working configuration and I had two working monitors in full resolution directly after login.

Another small problem: If I move the mouse before typing my login, the login dialogue moves to the primary monitor, which is still black during login. So I am typing this blindly. Not a huuuge deal, but is there a way to already load the working configuration before login?

This situation is where Linux is greatly inferior to Windows; using an Optimus-based laptop with one or more external monitors and where the configuration needs to be changed and getting everything to work correctly with either GPU selected.

Try this method. Use this command to create an xorg.conf file: sudo touch /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Open the file for editing: xed admin:///etc/X11/xorg.conf

If there is a problem getting back to the desktop, then press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to enter virtual console tty1. Use these commands to switch to the Intel GPU, remove the xorg.conf file and reboot:

The instructions in my previous post won’t work. Remove the xorg.conf file, if not already done:
sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf

The following steps are complicated but the only way I know of at this time to get the monitor working correctly and automatically with either Intel or Nvidia GPU selected. If I find a simpler method, then I’ll contact you.

Switch to the Intel GPU and reboot.

Open the file manager and right click on the .profile file and select Copy. Right click in the empty space and select Paste. Right click on the new file, select Rename and name it .profile-nvidia. Open the file and change DP-3 in the xrandr command to DP-1-3

Create a desktop script to switch GPUs. Right click on the desktop and select Create New Document > Empty Document. The name can be “Switch GPU”. Open the file and add these lines:

The desktop script must always be used to switch GPUs. After you click on it and type your password, the GPU that is currently selected will be switched, followed by a reboot.

Open Startup Applications. Click the + sign to add a Custom command. For the Command, add this xrandr command: xrandr --output DP-1-3 --mode 2560x1440_54.97

  • Why don't I have to put a similar command for DP-3 in my Startup Applications? Or maybe a better question is, why do I have to put it there for DP-1-3? Isn't this all solved by monitors.xml?
  • Does anything speak against using an alias for the commands in my SwitchGPU-Script via .bashrc?
  • Do you have an idea how the monitor could already be working before login? Currently, I am always typing my password into a black screen.

DP-3 is the output name used with the Intel GPU and it works with just the initial xrandr commands.
The monitors.xml file only lists info for DP-3.

Possibly, but it involves more configuration. Create a document in Home named .login and add this line:
xrandr --output DP-3 --mode 1920x1080

Make the file executable.

Open the lightdm.conf file: xed admin:///etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

Add this line, substituting XXX with your actual user name: display-setup-script=/home/XXX/.login

Use this command to make it executable: sudo chmod +x /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

You may need to create a second file named .login2 with the command:
xrandr --output DP-1-3 --mode 1920x1080

Then repeat the steps. If that resolution doesn’t work, then try 1024x768

The login problem could be resolved with your proposal!

I was just puzzled for a while, as I do not have the file /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
I added your line to /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/70-linuxmint.conf and made that executable.
However, as .login is actually the script to be executed, I also made that executable: sudo chmod +x ~/.login
I am not sure, if this is necessary, so I will the execution right of .login in a minute an make an update here.

As far as I am concerned, all problems are solved now and the thread can be marked solved (or should I do this?).

EDIT: I think I was right. .login needs to be executable. The config file does not have to be executable. I hope this helps : )

I just checked with two Mint 19.3 installations and /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf exists on both, the same as in my Mint 18.3 installation.

Unless you want to test a simpler method I have been working on for this particular situation. It involves:

1. I will build a custom EDID file for your monitor using edid-generator, containing only the 2560x1440_55 mode.
2. I will post the file and you will download it and add it to /lib/firmware/edid/ (the edid folder will need to be created).
3. The grub file will be edited and have this kernel parameter added:
drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware=edid/2560x1440_55.bin

Of course you will have to first disable all the steps currently being used.

Thank you for the suggestion, but I would rather not try another approach, as this one is working just fine for me and now, that everything is set up, is perfectly easy to use.
