High CPU when in zoom meeting

Hi,

I'm just experiencing a weird behavior for a week or so in which each time I start a zoom meeting cinamon the CPU goes close to 100%

When I look into the processes I see that some of the CPU is being used by zoom process but, actually, most of it is used by cinammon

This problem started one week ago. Until then the system worked perfectly. I'm not sure if it was related to some updated I did, but at this point I'm not sure hot to troubleshoot that.

I already opened a ticket to Zoom, but no answer so far.

hey i suggest you install the lts kernel and try with that 4.15 latest to begin with. for that cpu reading is not good does it go back to normal reading 1-2 % after you close zoom or? cinnnamon also use some cpu power itself. you can check this topic that is write by a mint user here for some tips and tricks to how to turn of effect and so on in cinnamon https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... -mint.html.

I am having the same problem. For me, what seems to work best is restarting cinnamon by pressing Alt-F2, and then typing r<return> in the little window that opens. But I would be happy to have a better solution!

I have the same issue on Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia and 5.3.0-51-generic kernel.
Has anybody a solution?

Hi there

I wondered if anyone had solved the problem with high CPU Usage? I'm using 19.3 with Cinnamon on a i7 processor machine with 16mb ram. All kernel and other updates done. A Zoom meeting take cpu usage to near 100% and you can't hear yourself over the noise of the cooling fan! System monitor shows it's more Cinnamon that's using the resources - up tp 70%. If you come out of full screen view it's better and if the Zoom is minimised, things return to normal.

Any pointers much appreciated

There's a known i915 bug that may be impacting any or all of you. Try booting to the 5.3.0-45 kernel and see if the issue disappears. If so, a new kernel update should also fix it quite soon I believe.

Rolling back to the earlier kernel does seem to have fixed it. Hopefully the new kernel should be a proper fix

You're welcome Barry.

I thought the most recent kernel (5.3.0-53) was supposed to have the fix, but maybe the next one will. When you see kernel upgrades, take them and reboot and eventually it'll be properly solved. At least you know how to revert if necessary.

I never had the high cpu issue but video was very laggy for about a minute after entering a meeting, but it resolved itself after that.
My solution has been to boot the 5.3.0-45 kernel
But the most recent kernel, 5.3.0-53 is just fine

It's strange, as it only happens with Zoom. I had 2 meetings on other platforms yesterday with no problem at all - cpu use barely lifted from tick over.

I met a similar problem recurrently for at least two months, not with Zoom (the videoconference software), but when running video software (Vlc, Celluloid, Smplayer), together with the zoom option of Accessibility fixed at 1.5. I had again the problem for a few days up to this morning, and by chance, after running Vlc with a youtube video, the problem disappeared suddenly. So, as Vlc is Open Source, maybe it could help the specialists to find a solution ?

I use Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon, and I update as soon as an update appears, so the kernel version is 5.3.0-53, but I had the problem with preceding versions. The problem happened to me several times, when running video software with Accessiblity at Zoom 1.5, and disappeared mysteriously in the same conditions.

It manifested itself physically by display problems: I use the option of Accessibility "Mode de suivi de la souris" = "Le curseur pousse le contenu autour" (sorry, I don't know the name in English, it is the third value of the option) and the cursor of the mouse and the display moved in a jerky way. When running the System monitor, Cpu use was very often higher than 50%, sometimes bursting to 100% - compared to the usual behavior which is about 5 to 10% most of the time when the problem does not manifest.

I add that my wife has exactly the same machine, uses also Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon and updates regularly, but she never met the problem (at least she didn't mention it to me). The difference is that she uses Libre Office and pdf rendering software, only very rarely video software.

To end the description of facts : The problem disappeared today (it was lasting for two days already), when running a mp4 video of low resolution (about 900x700) with h264 codec.

I would suspect that vlc has an algorithm that switch between "using gpu" and "using cpu only" for video rendering, according to the characteristics of the video it is displaying, that it saves the current values of the video parameters when it exits, and that Linux Mint is happy to keep these values and does not restore the values they had before running vlc ? If so, it would maybe be possible to adapt this algorithm and add it to the Control Center, so that one can change back manually the values of video parameters that vlc changed automatically ?
Probably, this is already possible in Linux Mint, but I did not find how to do it.

I hope this lengthy description could be useful for the specialists to solve the problem :D

I'm using kernel 5.3.0-53-generic and problem remains.

This is not only related to zoom. youtube videos also consume high cpu.

Could it be a problem with hardware acceleration or the GPU kernel drivers?

hey have you tried to disable hardware acceleration in firefox and/or chromium? and see if that solves it.
