SOLVED: GIMP suddenly doesn't work

Post by petedecember »

Greetings, everyone--
Strangest thing just happened: GIMP just quit working. I can load it, but all of the selection tools, bucket fill, etc. just won't work. When you click on a tool the pointer will change to the pointer for that tool but it won't do anything. I know the issue is LM (19.1 Cinnamon) because I uninstalled all instances of GIMP on my computer and then just downloaded the stable appimage (GIMP 2.10.18) but it still doesn't work. Is anyone else have the same problem, or perhaps with a different application? Thanks for the help.

Gimp is ok on Mint 19.3 current version is 2.8.22

You need to start gimp from terminal

Code: Select all

gimp
There may be some clues as to what's going wrong in the terminal, As your updated 2.10 gimp
does not work have you removed, purged and resinstalled gimp 2.8?

You will also have a hidden dot file in home
If youve added any extra brushes, pallettes or customisation these will need to be reinstalled,
otherwise you can also remove your hidden gimp directory

Code: Select all

rm -r ~/.gimp-2.8
Sometimes a bad configuration can upset gimp. If you have made many custom brushes, gradients
then you need to save your own work first

Thanks for the help, hal8000--
I installed GIMP via the software manager, thinking that I would get 2.8 and I would then purge it, only to find out that it installed 2.10.14. And it works! Interestingly the 2.10.18 appimage still is not working, but that is okay. I can live with 2.10.14. Thanks again.

Are you using the one Andrea Ferrrero maintains at https://github.com/aferrero2707/gimp-ap ... continuous? If so, what is the filename for the AppImage you are using? The current release became available on April 23; the filename is
GIMP_AppImage-git-2.10.19-20200423-withplugins-x86_64.AppImage

A few weeks ago a version was released that would not run for me. Sorry, I do not remember which one it was. I deleted it and used the older release until a new one was available. I started using the current release on Saturday, and I have not had any problems with it.

Hi Ben--
The appimage that I was trying to use was the most recent, GIMP_AppImage-git-2.10.19-20200423-withplugins-x86_64.AppImage from GitHub. I am not sure who maintains it. I was able to install a working version of 2.10.18 via flatpak, but the appimages still don't work. Weird.

Greetings folks--
I solved my own problem: I simply deleted the directory /home/peter/.config/GIMP-AppImage and that set everything back to the original settings. Now the AppImage for 2.10.19 with plugins will work no problem!
