Installing antivirus for linux mint

Post by David0089 »

Does this command similarly work for installation of antivirus software in Linux Mint 19.2 Cinnamon

sudo apt install --product-all --no-interactive

from the same directory where the file is kept?

As mentioned, there's no advantage to antivirus in Linux. Instead, this is handled by aggressive security updates of the package base itself.

More broadly, installing apps in Linux isn't like .exe files in Windows. There are several methods, but none are much like .exe except the deb file method, which when double-clicked invokes an installer app which does sort-of-the-same behind-the-scenes setup work.

Point being, to advise how to install an app, we would need to see a link to the source and/or an article about the app.

Here's a non-bias link you can look at: https://linuxhint.com/why_no_antivirus_linux/

This seems to come up more and more as more folks come over from Windows. Antivirus software is actually dangerous as they require administrative (root) privileges to run and all the major antivirus providers have had vulnerabilities discovered in their software - granted they are always looking for and quickly fixing vulnerabilities as they are discovered but they still happen. But more than that linux users in general need to understand that the real soft spots in terms security are in their routers and browsers and most of all their on-line behaviour.

Tighten up your router and your browser (plenty of advice how to do that right here on this forum). Don't download software from sites you know nothing about better yet stick to the Mint repositories and stay out of "bad' neighbourhoods on the inter-net.
