Is is possible to watch movie DVDs in Mint 19.3? [VLC is unable to open the MRL 'file:///dev/sr0'.]

Post by bassmothership »

I'm having the same old issue on a Mint 19.3:
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'file:///dev/sr0'. Check the log for details.
Tried all sorts of movie DVDs, not a single one plays. Except tha,t my DVD device is working normally.

After hours of reading threads about this same issue, and trying to install stuff still there seems to be no fix for this problem.

Is that because my dvd device is incompatible with Mint? Or my laptop is old?
I'm using a 2011 ASUS SBW-06C1S-U blue ray DVD player.

My laptop:

Could you please enclose the specs and reports wall of text between [ code ] [ /code ] tags?
Thank you.

Perhaps the bluray dvd that is in your dvd drive is the problem. Vlc has got some problems with playing encrypted bluray dvd's. Below a link with more info on this problem: https://www.howtogeek.com/240487/how-to ... -on-linux/

In general normal (not bluray) dvd's work excellently with Vlc. I have been using Vlc and LinuxMint for years now, but I have never played a bluray. Blurays can be tricky...

Blurays can definitely be tricky to play under Linux. The best way I've found is using the MakeMKV libraries (as suggested in the link carum carvi posted above). I generally extract them first to HDD, and then can play them easily. It's rather time-consuming, but once it's done I don't need to worry about it any more.

hey just a side note you might want to go to the lts kernel 4.15 instead of using that 5,3 witch is for newer hardware your computer is from 09/09/2009. and yes as been said above its possible to watch DVD/CD in Linux as long as you have a DVD/CD reader in your computer.
CPU Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9700K CPU @ 3.60GHz
Graphic Card: nvidia 2070 super
Ram 16 GB
Kernel: 5.4.0.33-generic
kubuntu 20.04

Laptop:
CPU Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-245m
cinnamon 19.3
Kernel 4.15.0.101-generic
Ram 4 gb

Even on windows, I had to rip blurays to a big file using makeMKV before playing. VLC would rarely play them "out of the box." I see there is a version of makemkv for linux, try that?
