With 5.3 kernel, Window Manager does not show Android phone

Post by algorithmic »

With any version of the 5.3 kernel, my Android smartphone does not show up in the window manager.

If I use the 5.0 kernel, it's fine. It has been this way for quite a while. I'm only getting around to asking about it now.

The device does show up using lsusb as:

Code: Select all

Bus 001 Device 005: ID 1004:633e LG Electronics, Inc. G2 Android Phone [MTP mode]
Linux Mint 19.3
64 bit AMD CPU

Any advice is appreciated.

Is it a good cable?
Are you sure you've got the right settings on the phone? - Try different transfer settings - Try Photo Transfer and File Transfer. See if anything comes up with either of those choices.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, and I've tried multiple.

Pretty sure. I don't see those Transfer settings, but since it works well with the 5.0 kernel and the phone shows with lsusb, I don't think it'll be a cable or settings issue.

Is this your phone?
Mine is an LG Stylo 4.

I looked for a Media Sync MTP option in my phone, but am not seeing it.

Have you tried following closely the instructions on this page?

The instructions don't quite seem to do what they say. Holding the Recent Apps button doesn't do anything except vibrate for a moment.

Since the phone shows up in the list of USB devices using lsusb, and works well using an older Linux kernel, wouldn't that suggest that it's on the Linux side?

...when I connect the phone, this shows up in syslog
May 24 15:50:06 mainuser-laptop kernel: [83033.331125] usb 1-1.2: new high-speed USB device number 21 using ehci-pci
May 24 15:50:07 mainuser-laptop kernel: [83033.360442] usb 1-1.2: New USB device found, idVendor=1004, idProduct=633e, bcdDevice= 3.18
Just nothing in the window manager.

Yes, quite possibly and even likely that the problem is with Mint, but no harm in going through the possibilities with the phone.
As I don't know the phone, a very quick search brought that up. I have no idea what you have tried and what you haven't, or your level of knowledge of the phone, which will be more than mine.
Could you try the 4.15 kernel? Why were you using the 5.0 / 5.3 in the first place?

Yeah, I hear you. I've tried and searched so much over the last several months that I couldn't possibly recount it all. I appreciate all your suggestions.

I'm just using the kernel that comes in the software updates. I'll probably just stick to the 5.0 kernels; I'm not very sophisticated about such things.

I'll give the 4.15 kernel a try too when I reboot next. Thanks again.

Confirmed that it works with the latest 4.18 kernel as well as the 5.0 kernels.

Just not the 5.3 kernels.

The 4.18 isn't supported any longer so may well be a bit insecure - if not now then sometime.
Great to hear the 4.18 is working, but could you try the 4.15.
Paradoxically the 4.15 is supported till 2023.
