Linux Mint on external disk

Post by oliverjames »

I installed Mint XFCE 18.3 on an external 3.5" disk in a Advance Velocity Disk S8 external box, c/w its own power supply. I did my level best to convince the laptop owner that life would be sweeter if she allowed me to replace Windows with Linux but to no avail...The problem is that Mint18.3 runs perfectly aside from 2 gliches:
- occasionally the graphics display on the laptops screen becomes unreadable requiring reset via the display manager App.
- more annoyingly, leaving the computer idle to go and do something else frequently results in returning to find that the system has frozen, having in effect lost communication with it's externally mounted software. I can stop this by leaving a radio stream running. I suspect that the external disk might be going into standby mode.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to how I can solve this.

Thanks in advance
