System freeze / crash under load - but audio goes on for a while

Post by arnad »

Hello everyone,

my Laptop (ThinkPad E585) running Linux mint 19.3 Cinnamon sometimes freezes. However, if I had audio running (from a youtube video for example) this will keep running for a while.

The freeze means the display gets stuck, as if displaying a screenshot. All input - including Fn-Keys - stops working. Networking seems to shut down as well, because Syncthing and Steam on my PC both report the Laptop disconnecting.

There are no reproducable circumstances, but it seems to be related to relatively high load. I've managed to crash it both by running Stellaris and by running my work setup (Eclipse, Tomcat, Apache, MySQL-Database and two custom server applications). But neither is a guarantee for the crash, and most times everything runs smoothly. There is no warning beforehand, FPS in Stellaris is fine and Eclipse reacts appropriately fast (for Eclipse, anyway).

Output of inxi -Fxxxrz

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, changing to the latest 5.4-Kernel has not prevented the crashes, I've had two since. It technically changed something - I can now move my mouse pointer across the frozen screen - but other than that no improvement.
