[SOLVED] GeForce GTX 1650 problems on LM 20

Post by tofu-martini »

Hello, new here and relatively computer-inexperienced. Like others, I am also having trouble with Nvidia graphics and Mint 20. I've looked at the other recent posts and decided to start a new topic due to some differences I've seen between the various issues.

The main clue that something is wrong to me is that, when I boot in Cinnamon, I get the "you aren't using hardware acceleration; expect high CPU usage" warning. Plus, the

Code: Select all

cinnamon --replace
process sometimes uses a huge % of CPU. However, I believe I've installed the correct Nvidia drivers and selected them in the driver manager. Specifically, I've tried both 440 and 450.

More clues that something is wrong: I'm getting no audio through HDMI currently, and a recent reboot hung up on trying to kill the

Code: Select all

nvidia-settings
process. In fact, Nvidia settings won't even open for me sometimes.

So, I've temporarily switched to using MATE to give my computer a bit of a break... but I'd like to get Cinnamon to behave.

Anyway, here's the output of

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxrz
:

I think you need to tell us what instructions you followed to install the nVidia driver, the link is best. If you didn't follow any particular instructions then you need to tell us exactly how you installed it. The reason is that I think the installation method you used is the wrong one.

I believe I followed the instructions here: https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-install- ... linux-mint except without the step that says "Disable Nouveau Nvidia driver." I got the v 450.57 driver from Nvidia's website. It did not show up in the driver manager. Also, in case this helps, here's the output of 'dkms status':

Code: Select all

nvidia, 440.100, 5.4.0-42-generic, x86_64: installed (original_module exists) (WARNING! Diff between built and installed module!) (WARNING! Diff between built and installed module!) (WARNING! Diff between built and installed module!)

Ok, it is all wrong.

What you need to do is undo everything you've done. Do you have a timeshift snapshot? If so, go back to a time before you installed the driver. If not, sudo apt-get remove --purge *nvidia* ought to do it, followed by a reboot to make sure you're booting with the modesetting driver. If it's been done correctly, you will see the following in the inxi -Fxz output:

Code: Select all

Device-1: NVIDIA TU117 ... driver: nouveau ...
If that shows up then you can head off over here: https://linuxmint.com/rel_ulyana_cinnamon.php

You need the instructions under the heading Solving freezes during the boot sequence. You need to reboot your machine and follow the instruction that says "Add the "nomodeset" option as illustrated below:", with a video to show you what to do. Once booted with nomodeset:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
apt update
sudo apt install nvidia-driver-450
Reboot when it's finished. You should now be using the nvidia driver and there should be no "FAILED" messages in the inxi output.

I do not have a timeshift snapshot, so I ran sudo apt-get remove --purge *nvidia* and rebooted. I am now getting the line

Code: Select all

Graphics: Device-1: NVIDIA TU117 [GeForce GTX 1650] vendor: Gigabyte driver: nouveau
in the inxi -G output as desired.

The issue now is that I am having trouble getting into compatibility mode. Holding Shift during boot is not getting me there (unless I am somehow doing that wrong...), and holding Esc (another option I have seen) is taking me to a GRUB terminal, rather than the menu pictured in the video of the link you sent. I have also tried commenting out the GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden line in /etc/default/grub and, separately, changing it to GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu with no success from either.

Is there likely an issue with booting that's keeping me from getting to compatibility mode? Can I get to compatibility mode from the GRUB terminal? Can I simply change quiet splash to nomodeset in /etc/default/grub after I've already booted? Thanks!!!

If you can boot up (more or less) normally, don't bother with compatibility mode and simply straightaway do what Kadaitcha Man advised, namely:

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install nvidia-driver-450
Reboot and test.

P.S.: small correction in Kadaitcha's first code line: it should be add-apt-repository, not apt-add-repository.

Booting is pretty normal aside from a consistent "initramfs unpacking failed: decoding failed" message, but that seems unrelated since it was happening before the graphics issues.

Anyway, your suggestion seems to have worked -- thank you! I even think that at some point before trying the instructions in the link I posted above... I tried the exact steps you suggested. Is it possible that these two processes created a conflict?

Ah, good pickup. Thanks. I was paying much more attention to the soothingly loud clicks coming out of my new keyboard than to the words coming out.

No. The decoding error is indeed unrelated. Kadaitcha Man has already informed the forum about the right approach:

For correct working of nVidia GTX 1650 in Linux Mint 20, you need Linux Kernel 5.8.0-28 and nVidia Driver 455 installed on your system.

1) In Update Manager -> View -> Linux Kernels: choose kernel 5.8.0-28 and install it.
Reboot.
Start Update Manager and upgrade system.
Reboot.

2) Then you have to install nVidia-455 driver

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
apt update
Start Driver Manager and install nVidia-455 driver.

Reboot system

That's all.

An update as of this posting: kernel 5.8.0-59 and nVidia Driver 465 works following nsamukov's instructions above.

However, I was unable to get kernel 5.11..0-22 to work with any nVidia Driver.
