Identify computer model number

Post by oldlearner »

I am running Linux Mint 7 (Gloria) on a 5 year old HP desktop with 1.5GB RAM and a 250GB hard-drive. I would like to visit the HP Support site so that i could download some updates such as graphics etc. The only problem is that i've mislaid the PC's original paper work so all i know is that the pc is an HP Media Center Desktop PC but not the model number.

Could anyone tell me if there is a software program i could use to identify the exact model and components please.

Thanks

The model number might be in the BIOS.

The problem is that those update is only valid for Windows.

You must have a label with serialnumber and type on the backside or under your machine.

What do you mean by this part? If you're after graphics drivers you (probably) won't find them on the website, however if it's artwork or BIOS upgrades you're after maybe you have a chance. If it's the former let us know what you're looking for and we can point you in the right direction. Also read my signature so you know what information to provide.

I also doubt you'll find any useful Linux software at the HP site.

However, a handy command you can use that provides a wealth of information about your system is dmidecode. It may or may not need sudo to be used, I'm not sure.

Have you installed graphics drivers already? Perhaps your two problems are related so let's try this.

Open a terminal (find it in your menu) and type the command

Code: Select all

lspci
Look for a line about graphics controllers. If you're not sure post the result here.

For Nvidia and some ATI there is a tool in your menu called Hardware Drivers. This will install the Nvidia/ATI driver for you.
If you have Intel graphics you probably need to do an update.

Mark Level 4 updates as visible but not safe.
Select and install the update xserver-xorg-video-intel
Make level 4 updates invisible again
Restart your computer.
If you have some other exotic controller we will have to search for a specific solution.

I think you will already be running the best driver for that graphics card. If you run "lspci -k" then you should see ati or maybe radeon listed under the VGA compatible controller line.

You may want to read this document but I don't know that any of the tweaks listed will help.

Tried that utility, it is already installed by Mint 7 (gloria) main edition, and proves quite informative
--I usually use mint menu>control center>system profiler and benchmark; to get a easy to read overview of the system, though it doesn't show the computer's model #, which I don't need to see, as it shows from the bios at boot..
  • sudo dmidecode>biosdump.txt

Usually there is a sticker on the case, sometimes on the side and sometimes on the back by the power supply, that has stuff like the computer's S/N.

But the only useful downloads you'll get from HP will be if you have a critical need for a BIOS update.
