[CLOSED / NOT SOLVED] Could not download all repository indexes

Post by tmteamt »

Hi guys!

I am having an issue with the update manager on LM Cinnamon 20.
I have already had a similar issue in the past and solved it on my own but I can"t figured out this one!

Whenever I refresh the update manager through the GUI, I get the following error:

Could not download all repository indexes

Code: Select all

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems.
If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored.
Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.
When I close this window, I get the following details:

Code: Select all

E: Invalid record in the preferences file, no Package header
E: Unable to lock the list directory
Potential trigger:

I noticed this issue right after I installed Ubuntu's Firefox 80.01 via the Synaptic Package Manager and locked the version.
After that, I reverted this change and went back to Firefox 80 (Mint version) but it did not solve my issue.

I also tried different mirror sources but without success!

N.B: This is a fresh install and not an upgrade. Please find below some relevant details about my PC:

You can try a few things.
1. Make sure synaptic isn't running
2. Restart
3. sudo /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintUpdate/dpkg_lock_check.sh (should not return a number.)
4. sudo mint-refresh-cache

Just a guess, but I would suspect one of the ppa's mentioned. Go to Software Sources, PPA's, disable them & see if that fixes it.

In software sources, try different package repository mirrors.

@jamiemint
I tried your suggestions but I still have the same problem.
The first command did not return a number.

@sleeper12
Disabling the PPAs did not fix it either!

@antikythera
I have already tried different package repository mirrors before posting this topic.

Then open software sources again and work through all the fixes one by one on the maintenance tab until hopefully your system will update again without error messages.

Check Software Sources, Additional Repos too, maybe something there needs to be disabled.

@antikythera
I applied all the fixes on the maintenance tab but no luck so far!

@sleeper12
There are no additional repositories except the CD-ROM (Installation Disc) which is disabled by default.

Did you try clicking 'Restore the default settings' in Software Sources?

I think I am gonna close this topic 'cause I need to give this PC to a family member today.
I am gonna reinstall the OS instead.

Anyways, thank you all for trying to help!

A reinstall may well be the best idea anyway. If you are giving it to someone else, consider doing it in OEM mode. That way they can set their own username and password plus language preferences on the first boot they see.
