Firefox 81.0 is crashing (SOLVED)
Installed firefox 81,0 from update manager and I get the crash dialog box when I try to open. If I restart firefox it freezes system.
Mint mate 18 kernel 4.4.0-116
Firefox extensions installed are only noscript and adblocker ultimate.
With prior firefox versions, sometimes firefox would not render quite properly but I would just close once and reopen with no problems.

Re: Firefox 81.0 is crashing
Dang, I wonder if there's a library or something not up to what Firefox wants? IDK though. If you make a fresh profile, does it still crash?
I don't have Mint 18, so I guess that's all the help I can be though, sorry.. :'(
Code: Select all
firefox -P

Re: Firefox 81.0 is crashing
I have same problem.
Linux Mint Mate 18, kernel 4.4.0-87-generic.
I have many gtk errors when i run firefox with terminal, so it's graphical problem who making bug and freeze.
Just one question, before your upgrade, did you have this option no activated (title bar disable) :

When you write "firefox" in a terminal and press enter, what error do you have ?
Is it gtk error ?
Annyway, before you try to repair this problem, if you want keep your configuration, make copy of this folder :
/home/user/.mozilla
Sorry for my bad english ^^

Re: Firefox 81.0 is crashing
At first it did not but when I started to change things it crashed again, but you started me on fixing this.
And, yes, Mamie_Jacqueline, most of the problem is with title bar setting.
I did the following:
Renamed the .mozilla folder and rebooted to create new .mozilla folder, then several tweaks and reboots of firefox settings and extensions.
Installed only noscript extension, nothing else.
Left the ugly title bar as default .. also left the density tab bar to normal, not to compact. Changed as little as possible to firefox configurations (did not add the search bar, for example).
The problem I think is noscript not getting along with the title bar and maybe other firefox settings .. almost like the noscript icon in top right of browser just does not get along with the rest ..
Noscript is most important for me so it stays .. I did not add adblocker ultimate back on and will just go with this as my mint 18 will be replaced in a few months.
If all this works, I will mark this solved in a few days.

Re: Firefox 81.0 is crashing
For my problem, it's 100% sure this is the title bar disable who make GTK errors.
I have tried changing only the title bar option with a default configuration, and the same problem appears.

Yay for having it working now! \o/
(Could you put [SOLVED] or such in the title so ppl know? Thanks!)
I use Ublock Origin and it works real nice, so you maybe can try that?

Re: Firefox 81.0 is crashing
ya, ublock origin over that noscript any day. noscript does so many things, it's a wonder it doesn't crash everything!
Re: Firefox 81.0 is crashing
So far, 2 users have reported that on their Mint 18 Mate, Firefox 81.0 crashes on startup:
+ Blueredgreen: > here <
+ Mamie_Jacqueline: > here <
I wonder a bit, whether the 2 affected Mint 18 systems are 32-bit systems or 64-bit systems?
I also wonder, whether any 19.x systems are affected as well? Again 32-bit vs 64-bit would be interesting to know.

Re: Firefox 81.0 is crashing
Hi, Same problem for me
I'm starting to use Chrome instead (which is pretty faster by the way), what a pity
I hope this will be fixed by Mozilla
Linux Mint 18 Sarah 64-bit
Core Linux 4.4.0-21-generic x86_64
MATE 1.14.1
only uBlock Origin

I just change browser.tabs.drawInTitlebar true to false in the file "prefs.js" and the graphical freeze/bug is resolve.
You can try to make this change in your profil :
In the folder "/home/user/.mozilla/firefox/"your name profil"/prefs.js
Open file "prefs.js" with text editor.
Change browser.tabs.drawInTitlebar true to false.
Re: Firefox 81.0 is crashing
Thank you, Mamie_Jacqueline, for providing and elaborating all the details.
Seems as if the crucial detail may only be the setting
If it is absent or set to false explicitly, then all is well.
If it has been set to true, the crash will occur.
Seems as if the problem is not related
+ to Mint 18.x as such
+ to 32-bit edition vs 64-bit edition
Just updated Firefox to 81.0 on Mint 18.1 64-bit Cinnamon. Firefox 81.0 started up without any problem. No crash.

is absent in about:config here. So the default must be "false". And all is well.

So it's the setting that enables the new Alpenglow theme to work, that figures

search in about:config for titlebar has only 1 item:
dom.disable_window_open_feature.titlebar false
I have 64 bit
Release Linux Mint 18 Sarah 64-bit
Kernel Linux 4.4.0-116-generic x86_64
MATE 1.14.1
I am running now with just noscript, no ad blocker and with default title bar and this is working.
The minor rendering problem I mentioned in first post has stopped.

Re: Firefox 81.0 is crashing
Thanks, that's the information I was looking for, but I did fully re-install Firefox without waiting for it... It would be useful for the next time !Mamie_Jacqueline wrote: ↑Fri Sep 25, 2020 4:38 amYou can try to make this change in your profil :

Re: Firefox 81.0 is crashing
In my Linux Mint 20, Cinnamon environment Firefox 81.0 is installed. Title Bar is disabled, Density is set to "Normal".
Firefox runs absolutely normal - I simply didn't find any errors.
I have set Firefox to Density "Compact", restarted it and it still runs without problems... I set Density back to "Normal" - no problems - still with switched off the Title Bar...
I can turn it as I like, Firefox doesn't crash and doesn't behave strange.
Firefox is set as my preferred browser.
Unfortunately, a problem again and again are connection problems with the Mint Forums (Sucuri, Sucuri ... ) : right now I had to switch to Opera with VPN because a connection to the Mint Forums was not possible with all other browsers.

I have 19.3 Tricia / Xfwm4 on HP ZBook-17 (64bit of course)
Firefox 80.0 NO problems
std update via sudo apt dist-update

Mamie_Jacqueline saved my day (night!) Thank you
What a lousy testing@mozilla.org, anyway.
