Need GPU drivers for AMD Radeon RX Vega 7 card [SOLVED]

Post by lizziedallas »

Hi, everyone!

I was trying to make redshift apply a blue light filter to my screen, but although the program ran, no change was visible. I've checked, and I don't seem to have the proper driver for my graphics (my card is and AMD Radeon RX Vega 7). Moreover, every time I boot my computer, I get the message "your system is currently running without graphics acceleration", but when I open the Driver Manager program to solve it, it says that no more drivers are needed. Any information about how to get the driver for redshift to work is highly appreciated (and I'm quite new in linux, so the more details, the better  )

This is the output of the inxi -Fxxxrz command:

I've already followed the instructions of the first post in this thread viewtopic.php?f=59&t=248059. Nothing changed in the output of the inxi -Fxxxrz command, but now I get a black screen when I boot linux, unless I boot in the nomodeset mode. But I'm running Linux Mint 20, and the amdgpu drivers offered there were for Ubuntu 18.04. I downloaded amdgpu-pro-20.10-1048554-ubuntu-18.04. Might this also be the problem?

Many thanks in advance!
Have a nice day :D

Welcome to the forum, lizziedallas.

AMD graphics drivers are included in the kernel. You do not need to separately download drivers for them which is why there is nothing in Driver Manager. However, because your computer is so new, you need a newer kernel than the 5.4 LTS kernel to get the AMD Renoir drivers.

--Uninstall the AMD drivers you installed and remove nomodeset from grub.
--Run Update Manager to get the latest version of Cinnamon (4.6.7) and all the rest of the updates which your install does not yet have.
--Install the 5.8 kernel. You can install the kernel using Update Manager by selecting View>Linux Kernels and click Continue. Then click on the top 5.8 kernel option to have the Install button appear.
--After you reboot, the drivers will be installed. Instead of N/A there will be amdgpu. Amdgpu will also be listed beside driver on the Display line, and the renderer will also be AMD.

Graphics:
Device-1: AMD Renoir vendor: Lenovo driver: N/A bus ID: 06:00.0
chip ID: 1002:1636
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.8 driver: fbdev unloaded: modesetting,vesa
alternate: ati resolution: 1920x1080~77Hz
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 9.0.0 128 bits) v: 3.3 Mesa 19.3.4
compat-v: 3.1 direct render: Yes

I also want to give some partition recommendations that may be better suited to LM20. They are recommendations because everyone has different needs which should be considered, so there are not hard and fast rules.
--LM20 automatically creates swap files so swap partitions are not needed unless you plan to hibernate your laptop (hibernate is saving to disk; sleep is saving to RAM) or you have very large memory requirements for your software and your installed RAM is not enough to handle it.
--Root partitions should be at least 30GB and preferably 40-50GB if you are going to have separate root and home partitions. Kernels and software install to the root partition and this can quickly fill and cause performance issues.
--Many prefer to keep their home partition separate from root, but that is a preference and not a requirement. You can have one large root partition and Mint will take care of creating /home within it.

Code: Select all

Partition:
  ID-1: / size: 22.79 GiB used: 7.32 GiB (32.1%) fs: ext4
  dev: /dev/nvme0n1p5
  ID-2: /home size: 91.43 GiB used: 1.04 GiB (1.1%) fs: ext4
  dev: /dev/nvme0n1p7
  ID-3: swap-1 size: 29.80 GiB used: 0 KiB (0.0%) fs: swap
  dev: /dev/nvme0n1p6
I have not used Redshift, but I suspect that just getting amdgpu instead of N/A may take care of the issue you were experiencing. Let us know how it goes and if you have more questions.

Thank you very much for the reply, SMG. I followed your instructions and now I get amdgpu instead of N/A in the gpu driver section. I include here the system specifications again, and I hope this is useful for other users!

Thanks for including so many details in the procedure, it was very helpful. I also followed your partition recommendations. I kept a smaller swap partition and created a bigger root partition. I think I ran into space issues before due to that reason, so thanks also for making me notice it.

All the best! :D
