[Solved] Upgrader switching sources mirror back to default before upgrade

Post by ChickpeasRgoodforU »

There seems to be a bug in the Mint Upgrade part of the Update Manager. Every time I try to upgrade Mint20 to Mint20.1 I get a very slow connection (14 kilobytes per second). The upgrade function seems to switch the Software Sources local mirror back to the default packages.linuxmint.com.

I cancelled and manually switched back to a fast local mirror for Main and Base, then reran the upgrade with the same result: downloading only from packages.linuxmint.com. So I tried to let it finish. After many hours, it failed anyway with "failed to retrieve" then "check internet connection and try again."

Now I've tried six times with failures each time. I have a normal internet connection that averages around 3 megabytes per second when downloading the distro or getting updates from local mirrors.

The funny thing is, each time it fails, the Update Manager later refreshes and asks me if I want to switch to a local mirror! Which I do, then try to upgrade again... which switched the sources back to defaults. If it's caching part of the downloads each time, eventually it should install... but this is getting ridiculous.

Is there a way I can force the upgrade to come from a local mirror?

You can try opening the Update Manager>Edit>Software Sources>Maintenance>click Fix MergeList problems plus click Purge residual configuration, and Remove duplicate entries.

I tried, thanks for the idea... but it's still downloading from packages.linuxmint.com. I've tried different mirrors at each attempted upgrade in case the problem was with just one mirror not having the right files, but it always switches back to linuxmint.com when the upgrade is initiated.

If it doesn't finish this time (now at a whopping 34 kB/sec) without errors, I might reinstall with a fresh 20.1... or leave it alone for awhile.

I'm grateful for any further assistance.

I'm seeing the same problem and have a work-around. Select the mirrors you want and leave the Software Sources window open then use the Update Manager.

That sounds good, Larry... but it finally got everything it needed from packages.linuxmint.com and ran the upgrade, 20.1 seems to be working fine. Upon rebooting and running the Update Manager: would you like to switch to a local mirror?

Definitely an odd problem. Anyone else that runs into this, please try Larry's work-around.

If this is widespread, it could be the reason why linuxmint.com is slow, being hit hard due to all the upgraders not using local mirrors.

This should leave your current mirror server selection intact:

Code: Select all

sudo sed -i 's/ulyana/ulyssa/g' /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Reboot.

Please post the output of:

Code: Select all

sudo cat /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list

Now I'm on 20.1, but it was the same mirror originally:
deb http://ftp.fau.de/mint/packages ulyssa main upstream import backport

deb http://ftp.fau.de/ubuntu focal main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://ftp.fau.de/ubuntu focal-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://ftp.fau.de/ubuntu focal-backports main restricted universe multiverse

deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ focal-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ focal partner
I tried several university mirrors around Europe with the same results, always back to linuxmint.com. But after the updater had all the files downloaded (took three days and many attempts), it upgraded fine. After rebooting, I set the Sources mirror to fau.de, then ran the recent kernel update which went normally at around 4000 kB/sec.

Ok, here is the backup from before the upgrade for comparison:
deb http://ftp.fau.de/mint/packages ulyana main upstream import backport

deb http://ftp.stw-bonn.de/ubuntu focal main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://ftp.stw-bonn.de/ubuntu focal-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://ftp.stw-bonn.de/ubuntu focal-backports main restricted universe multiverse

deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ focal-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ focal partner

The mirror reversal is probably coded into mintupdate itself, most likely in order to prevent potential syncing issues during something as radical as a release upgrade.

Doing the release upgrade by means of the terminal like I described in my previous reply, bypasses mintupdate and should therefore leave the current mirrors in place.

I verified this issue and found an easy solution. After the upgrade from 20 to 20.1 and the update manager sticks on asking to switch to a local mirror, just answer no. Then immediately switch to a local mirror and it quits asking.

Ok, that makes sense if the devs want the upgrade to come directly from linuxmint.com... then it's not a bug. I'll change the title to solved. Thanks everyone for the help!
