Salutations from the Outer Darkness ....

Post by Eighth of Seven »

Hi

New here, but not new to either Linux (previously mostly a SuSE admin on Dell PowerEdges) or Unix - but new to Mint.

Just dropped Mint Mate on an old Dell Latitude D810 to see what it was like, after reading recommendations, and very pleasantly surprised. Compared to a very similar spec machine that suffers from Windoze, it really motors !

Interested to learn more about the Mint distro and how it matches up to what I'm used to.

It's more aimed towards server systems than single-user. Lots of nice features if you're a SysAdmin. A long track record, known for solidity and reliability but not overly quick. Runs well on something line a Dell PowerEdge 2900, dual 3.2GHz Xeons, 16Gb of DDR2 RAM, 4Tb of SAS RAID.

I use them for running Finite Element Analysis, coded in old-fashioned C ...
