Please Help! Problems after upgrade to Mint 20.2 uma!

Hello Please help! when i try to browse files, linux mint goes into fall back mode, this started after 20.2 uma upgrade. I timeshifted back to before upgrade error is still there. here is a copy of my error.log. The error only happens when i click on files in the brwser no app errors or problems. This is super wierd! no bugs reported on this!!

So when you are using Nemo file explorer is when the fallback happens? Are you using Nemo or are you using a different file explorer program?

On the New features in Linux Mint 20.2 Cinnamon page scroll down to the section on Cinnamon 5.0. Nemo was changed in this version.

I currently have Nemo 5.0.3 with my LM20.2 install. You can check your version by opening a terminal and running nemo --version.

However, in your first post you indicated you Timeshifted back to LM20.1 and the problem is still there. I expect your system would show you have an older version of Nemo.

Looking through your .xsession-errors log and comparing it to mine, I see a line in mine which indicates:

I do not see that first line (or something similar) on the output you posted, although it is possible is it there and I just missed it.

My guess at this point is Nemo is not loading or not loading properly so when you try to open it then problems happen. I do not have any ideas at this time as to what might have happened. The fact the problem is still there after you Timeshifted is 1) odd and 2) seems to indicate something outside of Mint may be a factor in this (such as a mount point, possibly?).

Hi SMG, I was also reading those lines in the error.log that also caught my eye that you mentioned. So i have been thinking that maybe its a theme running from looking.glass that might be the problem, but i turned off win10 theme as well as CinnVIIStarkMenu (CinnVIIStarkMenu@NikoKrause) and the issue continues. Also my nemo is 5.0.3 same as yours and it was updated to 5.0.3 automatically 2 days ago by update manager. I traced back

Sorry! I forgot to post some of my own troubleshooting! I have tried the below information, i found on the
POPOS website but problem still persists.

Remove Duplicate Options From Login Screen
Some desktop environments provide more than one session.
For example, Cinnamon provides both a 2D and a 3D session.
The options available at login are located in the /usr/share/xessions directory,
and unneeded options can be removed by deleting the corresponding files. For example,
to remove Cinnamon's extra option:

Also, reinstalled Cinnamon Desktop Enviroment, still same problem file browsing with NEMO???

Reading back through your posts, I noticed you mentioned you have "CinnVIIStarkMenu (CinnVIIStarkMenu@NikoKrause)" installed. Is that this GitHub cinnamon-spices-applets/CinnVIIStarkMenu@NikoKrause/ ?

That was listed to last work with Cinnamon version 4.4 (Mint 19.3) on the page to which I linked. When I checked the code it indicated it had been tested with LM20 Cinnamon version 4.6.

Mint 20.2 is currently on Cinnamon 5.0.5.

Maybe that spice and or other code you have installed is causing issues and may need removed rather than just disabled?

Hi SMG! Sorry to get back to you so Late. But i was throwing everything at this problem! So i made some ground, i deleted mint and installed Pop os. For the life of me! the exact same error but with system freezing, i couldn't believe it! So after my 3rd install of pop i realized that it is a compatabilty issue but with this.

the upgrade to UMA didnt like that software and by the way Pop Os is got way more bugs than mint, but im sure as you already know and i am learning Linux is unstable, there has to be a way to filter the upgrade process and control the update&upgrade manager. This system will never be truly "OPEN SOURCE" with that kind of environment. At least in windows you can shut down the updates without causing fallback errors. OMG! Pop os if you ignore a update it would automatically put you in fallback mode, but im willing to stick it out as i learned some tricks on how to tame that beast! Thank you SMG!! Sorry installed CinnVIIStarkMenu & cinnamon desktop 3 times on mint &Pop Os no problem! Oh Man!!!! almost forgot!!! WINE_STAGING WAS the accomplice to Joystick&jstest-gtk these three elements put UMA & Pop Os in fallbackmode when exploreing Nemo. WINE-STAGING is "BROKEN"not needed for STEAM PLAY and newest linux distros!!!!!! Isolated the issue and reproduced the error! WINE-STAGING is "BROKEN" as Far as "LINUX UPGRADES for DIStros" WINE-STAGING is crashing the upgrades!!! Bye SMG, Thank you! Enuff of my RANTING!!! please close this issue it resolved!!!
