Samsung Galaxy Book2 Pro 360 has no sound through speakers, only through headphones

Post by weanoob »

I'm on Linux Mint v22.1, brand new install, and I'm not able to get sound through the headphones.
I've tried everything on the Linux Mint Sound Fix Tips.

Sound card is detected, and I see the sound bar "bounce" when sound is playing, but no sound actually comes through the speakers.

I looked at this thread and didn't seem to find much info. The linked ALC256 fix didn't seem to apply, as this laptop doesn't use ALC256, so I didn't try it.

Of note in my infodump, pacmd says that the speaker's availability is "unknown". I suspect things would be fixed if I could somehow fix it to check for the speaker's availability, but have no idea how to do this.

Anyway, here's my terminal output dump:

The only one that seems to apply to me is removing speech-dispatcher, which did nothing. I tried pavucontrol earlier, no dice.

The only thing that I can assume is that the laptop's sound card is so new that not even 21.1 has a driver for it. Is there a way that I can confirm this?

Is Bluetooth enabled? It could be sending sound to a bluetooth device. I get caught regularly on my phone with bluetoooth sending sound to my ear buds when I'm not using them.

You already posted the output showing the driver is installed. There are a number of different quirks and hardware settings which can, unfortunately, be different for every computer even when all use the same driver.
Audio:
Device-1: Intel Alder Lake PCH-P High Definition Audio
driver: sof-audio-pci-intel-tgl
Sound Server-1: ALSA v: k5.15.0-56-generic running: yes
Sound Server-2: PulseAudio v: 15.99.1 running: yes
Sound Server-3: PipeWire v: 0.3.48 running: yes

Please provide the output of

Code: Select all

journalctl -k | grep -Ei "ALSA|HDA|sof|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel"
We can likely get more information about your computer's specific hardware from that output.

Some of your parts look very similar to the person I helped in this topic SOLVED: headphone jack doesn't work starting with this post. Your pacmd list-sinks output likes very similar so see if anything is muted in ALSA.

Hello,

thanks for the answers above. I just wanted to second this issue, in my case on the Samsung Book2 Pro (no 360°). It also persists under Kernel Linux thor1 6.0.0-1009-oem.

However, things are improving between kernel releases. A while ago, the keys for changing volume didn't work, now they work. There was no physical audio device listed, now we have "Speaker sof-hda-dsp". inxi -SMA and aplay -l report the devices as the original poster wrote.

So at least there is progress.

Not a solution but I have a similar problem with my HP laptop. I also have the same audio driver that your system is using.

Some info:

Code: Select all

  Sound Server-2: PulseAudio v: 15.99.1 running: yes
  Sound Server-3: PipeWire v: 0.3.48 running: yes
What I found was that I had to make sure that both the Headphone and Speaker volume setting wasn't on mute (MM) in Alsamixer (run alsamixer in Terminal).
CLICK PICTURE TO ENLARGE
CLICK PICTURE TO ENLARGE
.
Then I manually switch between headphones and speaker in PulseAudio. Here is what shows on mine:
CLICK PICTURE TO ENLARGE
CLICK PICTURE TO ENLARGE
.
Menu showing that although my headphones show as "unplugged", they are plugged in and when I select headphones, they work.
CLICK PICTURE TO ENLARGE
CLICK PICTURE TO ENLARGE
.
You may have to do something similar for your sound to come out through the speakers.

The latest output you posted indicates it uses ALC298.
weanoob wrote: Sat Dec 24, 2022 4:58 amOf note in my infodump, pacmd says that the speaker's availability is "unknown". I suspect things would be fixed if I could somehow fix it to check for the speaker's availability, but have no idea how to do this.
Did you try running alsamixer yet? (as suggested by Jerry F) If any column has MM at the bottom that means it is muted.

I did find a bug [BUG] Samsung Galaxy Book2 Pro 360 no sound through speaker #4055 which is still open and well above my ability to do anything with it.

I didn't see any overt errors in what you posted, but considering how many people in that bug report are having issues, we may have to just wait and see if newer kernels help. (Presuming you are not able to find success with Jerry F's advice.)

I guess it is waiting for new Kernels. Quite possibly the Intel Evo hardware is too new.

In ArchLinux, they have similar problems, see
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Laptop/Samsung
.

Overall though, the hardware is really nice. A 15.6 notebook with only 1.1kgs of weight. The low weight made me switch from the 13.3/14 inch form factors back up to 15.6.

PS: For changing display brightness, for the time being I use a script that accepts values from 0.1 to 1.0 (and outside, if you want to experiment, haha).
xrandr --output eDP-1 --brightness $1

PPS: Dual Boot with Windows = no problem, it works.

FYI same behaviour under Linux Mint 21.1 Vera, kernel 6.0.0-1009-oem.

If you install pavucontrol, you can see that, in 21 and 21.1, audio streams, such as from Firefox, are routed to sof-hda-dsp "Speaker + Microphone". But there still is no sound output.

Did you check in ALSA to make sure neither of those options is muted (MM)?

thanks for your question.

Yes, I did. Unmuting in ALSA was my secret audio revival trick in the past. But alas, not here. See attached picture.

But FYI, on the archlinux BBS, somebody posted on 23rd of December that using 6.1.1-arch1-1 he finally got sound to the speakers on his zbook g9 with Alder Lake-P, after no success on 6.0.2.

[x] keeping fingers crossed

So, how do we install 6.1? The oem-kernels are at 6.0.0-1009 ;-).

You can try using Mainline – Another Tool to Install Latest Kernel in Ubuntu / Linux Mint, however, per this post you will need an updated version of gcc. I do not know how (or if) that would affect the rest of your install.

Greetings SMG,

thanks again for the swift reply and pointer, mucho appreciado!

I installed the mainline tool as advised by adding the ppa. Changing gcc was not necessary. Usage was as easy as typing:

Code: Select all

mainline --install-latest
I got 6.1.1-060101-generic and could boot it without any problems (e.g. crypto-ssd, complex USB setup, multimonitor with 5.120x1.440, fast WLAN with > 300 Mbps, sound via bluetooth, ...).

However, the built-in speakers still are silent ;-)!

But I am optimistic! All kernel 6.x versions I ran so far had no issues except the speakers.

Thanks for the feedback. Some people are having issues while others are not. I though maybe the gcc version might be the reason, but apparently it's something else if you did not have problems.

It may just be a while longer before all the skylake quirks are added to the mainline kernels.
